I thought I would give you another tip if you want to embarrass an officer while they are eating. Did you know the siren will not sound while the PA mike button is pushed in? This is true even if the siren switch is in the on position so you can override the siren to give instructions to someone via the PA.

And in most patrol cars, the PA mike will stretch to the driver's door. The door and seat cushion may be close enough to wedge the button down while holding the mike there. Well, it is close enough until the driver opens his door anyway. Then things tend to get very loud very fast.

That's one of the nice things 'bout the Caddy SWMBO drives. When I walk up to the car with my key fob in the pocket, it adjusts everything but the middle rear-view mirror to MY settings - seat, outside mirrors, steering wheel - even the radio station.
Youngest son is LEO in a small town outside of SA. He locked himself out of his unit one day during a traffic stop. Bravely tries to cooly call a colleague to get a key, but the Sgt. hears the call, and gets the story out of him.....on the open radio. BIL is COP in a neighboring town - they share the same net, so he hears it also. Coupla days later, he swings by, hands my boy a $5 bill without saying a word. As he's driving off, son calls on radio asking why "did you leave this with me?" He SHOULD have known his Uncle better..... "Key fund!" was the response.

Happened to me 2 months ago at ihop...

If someone runs out of the report writing room to take a hot call and stays logged into the computer, we like to e-mail the chief a letter of resignation. There have also been emails sent out with all sorts of confessions. I got one today which said the officer wanted to email us and let us know he always wanted be a star in a musical.

The motto is always log out.

All that... and MIRRORS!

I am 6'-5", Mrs. Flintknapper is 5'-7". I get in my vehicle after she has used it and all I can see is my Adams Apple in the rear-view and the rear tires in the side-views.

This used to happen Mrs. dub and I until I figured out that I could link our key FOB's to the programmed seat setting in our truck. For those vehicles with power seats and outside mirrors and the two programmable positions it might also be possible to link them to the individual key FOB's. No matter where my wife leaves the seat in the truck, if I unlock it with my remote the seats and outside mirrors will go to my settings and the same for her. I am a hair or two over 6 feet and she is a hair or two under 5 feet.

I would have just asked him to 25 with me somewhere, that way you wouldn't have to out yourself on the air.
A simple meeting between units after a pursuit to kinda debrief...seems like a good excuse to me. lol

Good to know that the 25 ten code is universally recognized!

It wasn't a big deal - we have fun on the radio now and again. I eat "lunch" (whatever meal at 0130 am is) with our dispatchers now and again to keep the peace.

Stuff you hear on the night watch radio is hilarious...most of which would get your written up or fired on day shift. I love working at night.

By the way, do all police cars have some kind of unit number posted
on the dash or somewhere, so that when you call dispatch, you are
always sure to give the correct cruiser number?

I would assume that the unique patrol car number would have to be
inside someplace since you may drive different units, even if you
usually have a takehome.

In many agencies, the patrol sector is used as the radio identifier. This is less confusing for Dispatch because the geographic relationship between the call for service location and the patrol sector it falls in is the critical information for deciding who to send where. It doesn't matter what vehicle the officer is driving at the time.

Nope. No way. I've been married almost 23 years now, and I've learned how not to get my head cut off in my sleep; and learning to leave the seat down was one of those survival tricks.

I am 1229 all of the time, Thank goodness! I briefly worked for an S.O. that used different call signs depending on the area and it was very difficult for me under stress. I know many of the people I work with by number better than by name.
