As a woman I'll step in here I briefly considered SOB...very briefly...I've actually fallen a couple of times on my back and the thought of falling on my weapon...yeh, no...I'd rather not be paralyzed. I tried at about 3 o'clock and that wasn't as comfortable as I thought it would be, we tweaked it a bit....then someone here mentioned she carries cross draw so I tried that...it's perfect for me. I've had fun buying vests to help cover.

I carried in several purses for probably a year, I really don't think anyone would have gotten a hold of my purse. I have a coronado backpack and a nicer purse, oh, and a fanny pack (yeh, screams "gun"). Also, a no-name small messenger style bag.

My thought on SOB carry is other than the risk of a hunk of metal permanently damaging your spinal column, you have got to have great shoulder dexterity to grip/draw every time. Years of lifting patients, children, feed, hay and wrestling rambunctious animals have been hard on my shoulders, and there are days I can't grip/reach past 3 on my strong side.

My other thought was when my alert level jumps up it looks a whole lot less conspicuous resting my hand at 2 or 10 than 6... JMHO. Also the anatomical difference in some girls makes 9 - 3 a much more conealable range than 3 - 9...

Or a 100 lb test steel fishing leader or light aircraft cable threaded through the straps and inconspicuously secured to the purse rings at the ends....

I have to jump in here with a plug for my new favorite purse. I have carried in Coronado Leather and Galco purses. Both of them great quality purses and good holsters. But my new favorite purse is from Gun Tote'n Mamas.

They are a new company and the quality is so great for the price that they are having a hard time meeting demand. They do have several styles, all of them with wire-reinforced straps. I have the Raven because I was looking for a smaller bag than my Galco Paige bag. Price for the Galco - $279, Gun Tote'n Mamas - $79.

The Raven bag has an adjustable strap, more than long enough to go across the body and fall at a comfortable area for quick access. The leather is buttery soft, and it has more pockets that I can figure out what to do with. It has become my new favorite bag.

A couple of things you need to know about purse carry. First off, you cannot access the gun as quickly as from a traditional holster. With practice, you can get that down to a reasonable time, but it DOES take practice. Second, your purse is an attractive target for thieves. You CANNOT carry it casually. You MUST keep it close to your body and keep a hand on it at all times. It is no longer "just" a purse. If someone takes it from you, they have your gun.

So, with all that - yes, I do carry in a purse frequently. I still think belly band is the most secure method, but it doesn't always work with what I wear. And I can almost always carry a purse.

The Best Defense program (Outdoor channel) this week (Breaking and Entering) had a section on SOB carry. It discouraged that type of carry for a number of reasons.

1. Good chance of serious injury if you fall on your back.
2. Easier access for someone coming from behind.
3.While you put you arm into the back to retrieve the gun you leave yourself on a very exposed and weak position. Easy for a BG to control you while you have your arm behind your back. You basically become a one arm man.

If a good SOB holster has excellent retention, I MIGHT recommend wearing it while in bed ...
if a person snores laying on their back.

2) prevents sleeping on the back and snoring
3) don't ask how I know
4) It's really uncomfortable, you'd be surprised how often you lay on your back or turn over
5) I don't do it any more ... I'd rather snore.
6) without a good holster, your in bed with a loose pistol; you'll find it, but it won't be comfortable.

My opinions haven't changed much. Another option to consider is appendix carry, which for a right-hander places the gun somewhere between 12:30 and 1:30. It's actually a good position from a tactical standpoint, and for women who have difficulty carrying at or near three o'clock, it can provide another choice.

The collective wisdom of the forum have persuaded my wife to an alternative to the SOB option that she wanted to pursue... although she is not happy about it. We've decided on the DeSantis Tuck-This II... now I've got to see if there is a new holster that I can order for myself (somehow I think there is!)
