So what's the take on Obama's speech tonight

GW Bush's speech after 9/11 at the Episcopal National Cathedral was an "appropriate" venue for a memorial service. I don't remember any "whoops and hollers." The audience tonight showed disrespect for the dead and injured by turning it into a pep rally for the President. Quite frankly, I was also turned off by most of the pundits leading up to this, as all they discussed was how this was an "opportunity" for the President to regain popularity if he did it right. It was particularly hard to watch people like Charles Krauthammer, whom I greatly respect, concentrate on this. Just MHO.

I agree. This is the start for the 2012 elections for the Left and it is my hope people remember just how shamefully they handled themselves. Obama chose the venue and should be held responsible for his supporters actions. The media pounced on Bush and conservatives for much, much less.G26ster wrote:GW Bush's speech after 9/11 at the Episcopal National Cathedral was an "appropriate" venue for a memorial service. I couldn't bear to watch. I would have thrown something at the TV. And that TV was a Christmas present.

Because "one of their own" was not harmed in either incident.Beiruty wrote:everyone is saying more gun control? Why it did not happen after Virginia Tech or Fort hood incident, with the later extended magazines were used too, no?
This was not a wasted tragedy. That's the way they think. Remember the memorial for Paul Wellstone, where they turned it into a political rally, and Ted Kennedy's memorial, where his grandson railed for health care reform.

Pep rally setting was off-putting. But I'm not going to judge the people in that town. Perhaps they just needed something - anything - to boost their spirits a bit. Been a hard few days. They seemed to cheer at any mention of anything having to do with Tuscon, U of Az, or one of the victims or heroes. Or perhaps it was just socially inept college students. As some pundit pointed out afterward, Obama's speech didn't have any "applause lines" in it - so I don't think he was necessarily pandering to the hoots and hollers.
Speech was OK. He had one good line about making a country that lives up to our children's expectatinos, relating it to the expectations of the 9-year-old victim.
Found it interesting that his one direct reference to the gun issue was to a debate over "gun safety" - a different and seemingly less inflammatory phrase than "gun control" especially to the ears of moderate voters. There were also some veiled references to what I believe will be a major push for gun control - something about challenging "old assumptions" in order to reduce violence.

I agree. Also the 9-year-old girl becomes a lightning rod for gun control too. As much as it sickens me to say so, it's true. Antis will use that little girl's memory to further their plans. "it's for the children" and all.Jasonw560 wrote:Because "one of their own" was not harmed in either incident.Beiruty wrote:everyone is saying more gun control? If NRA can't stand up and defeat this storm in a tea-cup, then more law suits is ahead.
Why not concentrate on the real problem by spending more money to treat kookoos?

I've never personally understood why someone's mental state would negate their responsibility when it comes to murder. You can argue that it's not their fault, "They couldn't help it," But neither can someone carrying a deadly, incurable plague. Doesn't mean you have to ignore the danger they pose.
I know this is a touchy subject, but sometimes I wonder how Hitler would have made out if tried in a California courtroom.

--Rant On--
Right after the Fort Hood terrorist attack, Oblameo's (pronounced: Oh blame oh) first comments began with a bunch of 'shout outs'. Two of my grandchildren were on post and mere blocks away during the attack. Talk about feeling helpless! Now the President and Commander In-Chief wanted to act like a rock star. Next, during the memorial service, when Oblameo was introduced there was a section of the crowd that erupted into a cheers and screams as though Elvis himself was getting ready to sing. I did not see who, but someone immediately found a way to squash their cheers. Needless to say, I did not feel a need to consume and digest any more of his oral bowl movement.
Other than the Fort Hood terrorist attack, how many times since he took office, has he attended memorials of our brave service members killed in action? (IIRC he was recently shamed into calling a service members family and it was contrasted to his Michael Vick call.)
Just asking...........................

Sadly last evening was the first big campaign meeting of the 2012 Obama Presidential run. Too much Ra-Ra and the T shirts were tacky.

Term Limits, Please.

I've avoided commenting on this particular bit so far. I'm surprised it hasn't come up yet..
I posted earlier in this thread that I thought he did a good job of walking the fence.. I still feel that way. However, when he started talking about "holding our hands over our hearts and reciting the national anthem" (something related to a book that the 9yo victim was featured in, of children born on 9/11/01), I have to admit I got a bit nauseated... There are way too many photos of Mr. O with his hands at his sides when over his heart would have been more appropriate for the CinC or even a candidate for that position.

As I understand it the duties of the President are to make sure that the US laws are enforced, has veto power over legislative bills, is the commander in chief of the armed forces, is to oversee foreign policy (treaties etc.), and appoints members of the supreme court. I wish he would stick to his job!

I did not watch the speech. I cannot stand that guy. Whenever he is on the TV I turn it. It does not surprise me that his supporters would be hootin and hollerin at a memorial. It also does not surprise me that he didn't have the decency to remind them that they were at a memorial and to pipe down.
