If I'm not mistaken, having property in your possession or not doesn't make it NOT a burglary. The act was committed whether or not they actually absconded with the property.

Also, seems like the wiser thing to do would've been block their vehicle, call the police, ready your firearm. I think from reading Excalibur's posts about attempting to confront a perp, even in known surroundings, doesn't seem like the wisest thing to do.

Burglary is based in part on intent, namely the intent to commit a felony, theft, or assault. It's difficult to prove the intent unless the offender commits or attempts to commit the act.

Otherwise illegally entering property is criminal trespass.

I was referring to the homeowner pursuing the "suspects." Using force or deadly force against fleeing robbers, burglars, or thieves is justified only to recover stolen property (as I wrote earlier, not to apprehend or punish the offenders).

If you have plenty of time, disconnecting the drive shaft is a good one too.

Farmers around here have come up with all sorts of ways to make sure that trespassers, poachers and thieves don't disappear before the sheriff shows up.

Shoving a potato up the exhaust pipe is easy and quick.

However, I don't recommend exposing oneself to an unknown threat for such a purpose.

Sometimes, an authoritative display of your CHL badge is all it takes to stop an evildoer in his/her tracks. Sometimes, that doesn't work so well...

I dunno...last time I exposed myself to an unknown threat, it worked quite well. Afterward, maintenance always called to make sure I wasn't in the shower.

Something about a naked, hairy, wet guy screaming obscenities and brandishing an axe apparently makes them understand the need to announce themselves loudly and clearly before walking into an apartment.

I don't recall if it's FoxLabs or another company, but somebody makes a pepper spray with a small hose and a needle, specifically for injecting through the weatherstripping of a car. IIRC, there was also talk of making it with a bug-bomb style locking button so the officer could just push the button, leave the can hanging there, and have both hands ready in case the suspect still wants to fight after getting out.

Seems quite "labor-intensive" to me. The "run" option appears to have a lot of merit in my opinion.
