No, but a full background check on buying gasoline would stop them from getting to their crime scenes where they'd rob pillage and plunder. (Assuming they didn't know how to siphon gas illegally, but then, they be breaking the law)

Exactly. Someone who participates in IDPA or other action sports can easily go through several hundred rounds per month. If you shoot one or more matches each week, you will consume 500+ rds per month. In Houston there are IDPA type matches almost 7 days per week somewhere in the metro area. Many people hit several per week.

NCIS on gun purchases really hasn't "flushed out" the bad guys when it comes to buying guns, because bad guys don't buy new guns - they have other people do it, or they buy from private sellers who don't know they're bad guys. Bad guys are bad, not stupid.

Should we also say that swimming pools must remain empty until they're in use, and then immediately drained to prevent the thousand of accidental drownings each year?

Having ammo background checks would just create a new black market, kinda like the deal with cigs. and drugs right now. It would also rapidly lead to ammo registration, at least in many states. The usual question I get when I am against such things is : If your a good guy what do you have to hide? My answer is EVERYTHING. I want to hide as much of my personal life from others as possible, because it is none of the Governments ( or other peoples) business if we are talking about constitutional rights.If the Government wants to regulate guns and ammo, then they need to amend the constitution and remove the second amendment, that is the constitutional way to do it, and very difficult by design. We already have too much infringement on our rights , we don't need anymore.

I go through a brick of .22 a week for Bullseye practice, not to mention the .45. If I were a better shot maybe I could cut back.

I have seen what I consider pretty dumb questions on various forums, this one takes the cake. I know the old saying "there is no such thing as a stupid question" this saying was just proven to be wrong...........

You might also consider the fact that the folks who lie about their criminal histories on Form 4473 and get caught on the background check are almost never investigated or prosecuted, even though they've committed a federal felony. A similar system for ammo would be no different.

Another aspect to remember is that huge volumes of ammo are sold via mail order and over the internet.

That would get shut down by an NICS requirement.

For those of you would might think even for a millisecond, "when I don't buy over the internet", the competition that arises from a national market in ammunition is why your local gun store needs to remain competitive.

Just on this forum we have folks buying upwards of 5000 bullets at a time for reloading. I think my last combined order of 9mm, 38, and .45 was around 8000. We have folks ordering over twice that amount and twice as often.
