I'm in the same boat, recently I was at Academy purchasing some target ammo. The lady behind the gun counter started to grab the ammo then asked, "How old are you?" I told her I was 22 and she's like, "can I see your ID?"...I guess I still look 18....

Walmart: Are you buying these for a handgun?

Me: Only if I can get 30 of them into a magazine. Otherwise, No.

Then you will when they offer you the senior discount.

...and after that, you;ll be *happy* to get the senior discount, because you earned it by living long enough to be eligible.

I am 51, and when people card me I say 'Oh, thank you for thinking I must be under 21. Now, please give me the name of your optometrist so I can set up an eye appointment for you, cause you must be BLIND!!!'

On the asking the question, as others have stated, it is the rifle/handgun 21 vs. 18 year old thing. And, depending on the clerk, some know it doesn't matter on a person they are sure is over 21 and just enter something. Others will ask and enter the response you give. If I remember right, if you answer rifle, then the system responds 'Is purchaser over 18' and if you answer handgun, then it just responds 'Is purchaser over 21' to prompt the clerk to request ID and validate the age if the buyer looks young. Most clerks will go ahead and answer the second question if there is no doubt the person is over the required age.

True story: I was in the checkout line behind a woman who was about 4 foot 11 1/2 wearing heels. I would have said she was 14 years old and trying to look like 16. She bought some alcohol and got carded.

When my turn came I asked the clerk how old she was. He said 22, and her ID looked valid.

I have the opposite problem, in that I look older than I am. When I turned 21, I went into a store to buy a 6 pack of beer as a "ha! I'm 21!" thing. The clerk didn't even bat an eye, just rang me up. Kind of disappointing, as I wanted to show off that yes, I was legal. If I had known they weren't going to check I would have started buying beer earlier.

That whole year, I only got carded about half the time I went anywhere/did anything.

I could buy beer when I was 17. I occasionally got carded, but usually not.

I remember one time I said in passing that my 35th birthday had been a few days earlier, and I had become eligible to run for president. The man I was talking to, who had known me for a while, was incredulous that I was not at least 40.

I think the clerks who ask for ID when the customer is obviously well over 21 are just acting like robots because that is what they were trained to do.

(Employers really don't want employees who can think independently, because those employees might decide they need to be paid more or be treated better).

I stopped at the Walmart off the GB in Carrollton a while back and picked up a box of .357 Mag. They just happened to be hollow point. When the nice young lady rang me up, she asked if I was going hunting. I told her "No, just target practice". She gave me a strange look and said, "I thought you were supposed to use FMJ for practice, and JHP, for hunting." Needless to say, I was impressed that this young lady knew the difference in ammo styles. Some one raised her correctly!

She knows more than I do. I thought JHP was for Personal Defense and not suitable for hunting. But I haven't hunted in years...

True story. I went to the local Wal-mart with my younger brother who was visiting from out of town. We picked up some Shiner Bock and I noticed a sign near the beer case that said "we ID under age 40". I commented to him that they could have at least said 30 so I didn't feel so bad if they don't ask me for ID.

Sure enough, young girl at the check-out doesn't ask me for ID. I asked her if I really looked like I'm over 40 (I was a week away from my 41st birthday at the time). She said "oh yeah" without missing a beat. My brother didn't stop laughing the whole way home.

I've only been asked that question when buy .22 ammo.

I think it probably had more to do with the graying hair and beer belly.

Let's just say that its a good thing she doesn't work for tips.
