A bigger threat to popular tiny 'lap dogs' alone in the backyard is the Red Tailed Hawk or perhaps an owl of the night. The dog just disappears....bigger the bird; bigger the dog.
As a matter of fact, last week their were at least 4 large birds circling our house while I was out with the dog, they appeard to be Hawks. Our dog would be an easy target if one decided to swoop in for a take out dinner.

...you must use a scope...the ear ain't the hole I could hit without one...so you've actually killed coyotes with that round??? if it's quieter than a CB and will still kill even squirrels reliably, I'm gonna order some...the mfgr.'s ad said don't use them in rifles, though...I can the CB and they're quieter than my revolver...maybe these will be the ticket for the revolver...

If you see more than two birds around here it is often times a group of vultures. The vulture cruises with wings in a open V and the raptors are more flat winged cruisers. If your dog is small its best to keep an eye on the sky.

My wife and I spend our summers in an area where eagles are very common. During the calving season in late february and early march it is common to see several eagles hunting for new born calves over the large ranches.

...we have a lot of red-tailed hawks here...often see 5-7 playing...I've seen 'em float on the currents for almost a minute and then flap one time and do it again...awesome critters!!!

...I've heard all my life that buzzards won't kill anything...only eat something once it's dead...my favorite cartoon used to be two buzzards on a limb...one tells the other one "I'm tired of waiting...let's kill something"...is the story true...will they kill to eat???

If you believe the "Hank the Cowdog" series of books, no....they just wait. Not that I would ever read a child's book series :biggrinjester:

Great Horned Owl….nailed this Cardinal in an old dog pen behind my house. I happened to be walking down to my shop to photograph an axle. GHO’s hunting in broad daylight is pretty rare, but here you go:

As for Suburban Coyotes, “scaring them away” does nothing but teach them to be more careful. If they are not killed, they WILL return. Thinning their numbers is the ONLY solution. I’m, sorry if that offends the sensibilities of some folks, but to borrow a line from Larry Potterfield “that’s the way it is”!

+1!

I can't believe that no one has said it, but...

OP,
I hear the Ruger .380 LCP with a Laser site is pretty effective. :smilelol5:

Seriously, I have a .22 short with pump that sounds like a hand clap. I have dispatched a couple of threatening nuisance critters with it, one pretty large.

IANAL and IMOPO, I have had to discharge a firearm in city limits and called the police to ask permission to shot a dog that was hit by a car and was going to die anyway. They told me if you are legally discharging your firearm in ANY city you CAN NOT be cited for it. No city is allowed to make laws against CHL's. The no discharging a firearm is for people that want to fire them on New Year or shoot beer cans in their backyard.
