Does yours have the Mauser type controlled feed extractor? My old Ruger has that, but the R700 VSF doesn't. I kind of liked that feature, and I heard that Winchester, at least a while ago, had returned to using those types of extractors in the Model 70.

The barrel is what Winchester calls a medium-heavy profile and is fluted. The stock is a carbon fiber and fiberglass mix, and the rifle weights just 7.5lbs. I did bust off a round just so I could say I shot it and recoil is not anywhere near what I expected from a light gun.

24 or 26" barrel?

I've got a really nice .308 R700 with a 26" heavy fluted barrel in an HS Precision stock, and I think it weighed in at about 8.5 lbs sans optics. Other than yours having a stainless barrel and action, our rifles are very similar.


Mine is left-handed, and I mounted a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 with the B&C reticle because I wanted a good all around general purpose scope. I got both the rifle and scope from Sporting Arms. I was actually looking for a different scope, but Sporting Arms had this one on hand, and they were returning it to their distributor because they had bought it for another customer and it wasn't what he wanted. They offered to sell it to me at their cost so they wouldn't have to pay the freight to ship it back. In as much as I had just gotten a $1,187.00 MSRP rifle from them for $831.00, that seemed like a pretty good deal. I think I paid about $535.00 or so for the scope. The combination works fine for me. The BDC reticle is calibrated for .308 range bullets out to 600 yards with a 200 yard zero, and realistically, I'm not likely to try and shoot something outside of 600 yards away, so that turns out to be a pretty good scope for my intended use. The rifle is certainly capable of further than that, but I have the old Mark I eyeballs, and they aren't capable.

But ......... Aren't the black ones more deadly or evil or assaultive or something?
Does the BATFE know the Winchester Model 70 Coyote Light comes in black?

Wouldn't just the sight of a black one strike fear in a coyote's heart so it has a heart attack and there's no need to use ammo?

True, but in order to offset that the barrel is stainless. If I wanted to scare things to death with a bolt gun I would grab my .270 which scares the local Brady supporters and gets me asked "What is that thing?" at the range.

Here's the update, I have wanted to try the Nikon Predator BDC reticle for some time, just because I am interested in not actually having the cross-hair cover the point of aim. I need to range it to see exactly where the BDC lines up on a .308 but since I have a Model 70 "Coyote Light" rifle, the Nikon "Coyote Special" scope with the reticle I want to try seems to be a nice match. In fact, this aspect has led me to refer to this rifle as ... "Wile E." (You can't tell me you didn't see that one coming). So here's a picture of it mated up with one of my Harris bipods.

Wow! Your Ace is WAY cooler than ours... GUNS AND TIRES! Ours is mostly lawn, garden and plumbing. While fun...not near as much fun as yours!

Out where we live, small towns surrounded by other small towns, Ace Hardware stores sell everything.
