That's an interesting rig you have, and this guitar-addicted inquiring mind would like to know how you interface bagpipes with a distortion pedal/amp? Do you have a 1/4" output jack on your bagpipes?

Gonna have to mic it. I'm thinking a Shure SM57 as the fallback mic when you don't know what else to use. But a Sennheiser 421 might be cool on there. Gotta go through a mixing board or something as a preamp and then come out 1/4" to the guitar rig.

I can't believe there are factories on this planet that build such things as bagpipes and thong bikinis in size 44. I honestly believe that the purpose of cruise missiles is to take out such facilities as well as accordion factories and mime schools.

...Put a little more puff on it, AndyC...I've slept with the windows open and ain't heard a thing...I like a lonely bagpipe now and then...must be my Scottish grandmother's blood...

Sorry, but a single mic is just not gonna work.

The dulcet tones on a bagpipe come from the chanter. You need a pick at the end of it for absolute clarity. Each of the drones needs its own pickup or you loose the effect after 50 feet. How about a Marshall full stack for each one.

And with chasfm11's suggestion of several Marshall full stacks. At the end of the piece totally thrash it all ala Pete Townsend.

421s sound good on, well, everything I've tried them on. Shure SM7s (without the 5), too. Ooooh, or an EV RE20 (my current favorite snare mic, if you can squeeze it in there).

I had one of my neighbors come knock on my door at 1 am when I first moved into my new house. He was furious and started off by swearing at me and threatening to call the cops. Apparently my dogs had been barking and were keeping him awake. I informed him that he did not need to use profanity and that I would bring them inside so he could sleep. I had not heard them barking because I was in a deeply medicated sleep. I went to the backyard to find out why they were barking. Turns out there was somebody in the neighbors backyard trying to steal his lawn mower. When I shined my flashlight on him he jumped the chain link fence and ran right past my neighbor. My neighbor then returned to my front door and knocked again. He introduced himself politely and told me that I had a pair of very good dogs. Told me to have a nice night and left.

He and I are pretty good friends now.
