I didn't want to pile on but leaving a firearm laying in the open around anyone, children or adults, is just asking for a possible tragedy. Your mom could have easily picked up the gun and held it up as she asked what is this. Being unfamiliar with guns, she could have just as easily pulled the trigger.
Being around firearms at one point in her life is NOT the same as being around guns "ALL HER LIFE". I have read this comment on this forum before and always wonder how folks can think the two are the same.
I learned this the hard way. Both my children(adults now) have been around and used guns all their lives with no gaps in ownership or usage. Not even for a month. Being comfortable about this and the fact that I live alone, I had gotten bad about taking my handgun out and setting it on the bar.
My daughter showed up one day with her boyfriend(husband now and better educated about guns at this time). He saw my LCP laying on the counter and says in an almost childlike enthusiastic voice, "look at the cute little gun". He makes a bee line for it and is about two inches from picking it up when my daughter hollers in a most impressive authoritarian voice, "DON'T TOUCH IT". He froze and I went and retrieved the gun and unloaded it right in front of him.
I took the opportunity to educate him on how ALL guns are loaded and not to be randomly grabbed up like "cute" toys. She took the opportunity to scold me for leaving weapons laying out like that and I agreed.
This will never happen in my home again. My daily carry is ALWAYS placed out of sight and high. Once I start having grand kids around my house, they will always remain locked or at the least in a gun box with quick unlocking combo.
