Totally off topic, but where are you from? I have never heard anyone refer to DPS/Troopers as Staties, 1st time I heard that term was in the "The Departed".

I am just making a guess, but I know the term is used in the northeast. Basically from about Philadelphia up to Boston. Outside of that area, either trooper or smokey is much more common. Smokey became much more common after the CB craze and the movies.

The last generation GTO's like yours certainly have the horsepower, but I think the reason
that they did not become a sales success was the tame body styling. They didn't have the headturning
look of a muscle car. I liked the rear bumpers that had "GTO" on them.

Pontiac created the fast and good looking G8 with high horsepower in a 4 door sedan, the ability to get a stick or
a slushbox, and was affordably priced for a roomy, speedy package. Unfortunately Pontiac was pink-slipped by GM and not
many G8's got sold before the funeral. The front ends are very aero without being "bar of soap." Although I personally
think the tail lights were a little too small for the rear upon which they are mounted.

GM said that they would not use the G8 platform for any other purpose at the time Pontiac died, but recently I saw
a speculation that GM would possibly rebadge the G8 with a bowtie and sell it as a police interceptor. Police love rear wheel
drive for pursuits, and the Chevy police packages of late only have rear wheel drive in the Chevy Defender. The Chevy Defender
is the name for the Tahoe with the police package.

TAM's son has a G8 that was a former rental, IIRC. He got that after having a used Crown Vic police unit.

Rebel and schufflerbot:

The term "Staties" (say State-eez) is the common Massachusetts term
for the Massachusetts State Police. The reason that you saw this term used in the movie "The Departed" is of course
that the movie was set in Boston.

The main character in the movie, played by Jack Nicholson, is meant to be "Whitey" Bulger. He is the 81 year old,
serial-killing, drug-dealing, personification of evil who was the head of the Boston Irish Mafia, which was known as
the Winter Hill Gang. He was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. He disappeared in January 1995 and was on the run
for 16.5 years. He was just captured in Santa Monica, Calif. where he was living 3 blocks from the beach.

When they searched Whitey's apartment they found 20 to 30 firearms (depending on which news you watch) and
$822,198 dollars in cash. It was mostly in stacks of $100 bills hidden in the apartment's walls. Since the Feds confiscated
the money, Whitey pleaded that he was indigent and needs a public defender.

Whitey killed (or ordered the killing of) at least 17 people in Mass, 1 in Florida, and 1 in Oklahoma.

My wife is from outside Boston and has always used the term "staties", therefore I now use the term as well.
