I work in IT. The place I work for has another location in Tyler. We pack up all the servers and set up shop in Tyler. The downside is that, during any "mandatory evacuation" (such as Gustav, where the storm didn't even come here), I still have to evacuate (and put the servers at some risk), but the upside is that the company pays all expenses (moving truck, hotels, diesel, per Diem) as well as double-time.

If I didn't have to evacuate, there might be times I wouldn't. I agree that some evacuations are unnecessary.

I have sort of the opposite situation in that if I do evacuate I have to go right back in once the storm has passed. However, outside of my work requirements, on a personal level, I will determine the risks for myself and decide whether or not I evacuate, not some politician whose motivation is entirely political.

I sheltered in a brick apartment in Baton Rouge for Hurricane Andrew many years ago. More recent I stayed with my home during Hurricane Ike. I saw trees bending over at almost 90 degree angles. I watched as my wooden doors, which were behind storm doors, bent inward from the constant storm winds. I listened to very old oak trees snapping during the night. Power was gone. Still, I felt safer than I would have out on the road with a million people, short of gas, short of water, everyone in a bad mood.

If you must leave your home, carry your concealed weapon if licensed, carry a backup under the MPA law, pack the rest boxed in the trunk. Take as much water as you can carry. Take some non perishable food items. Take extra gasoline if available.

I don't live on a barrier island so my choice is to shelter in place. If I had to evacuate, I might leave most of the rifles in the safe, but I would take the bolts with me.

True, but "Traveling" would have been pretty easy to say when "evacuating"

When I've evacuated (Rita and Ike), I carried all the guns and carried a "combat load" of ammo (can of 5.56, 10 boxes of buck, and 100 rounds for each of my pistols. I loaded them in the trunk with a thick towel wrapped around each one.

I lived in Galveston for Rita and Ike. After the horror that was the Rita evacuation (8 hours from clear lake to Katy in a manual transmission black mustang cobra, AC off, 100+ degrees) I almost stayed for Ike, but went to Sugarland at the last minute. My neighbor rode out the storm in my loft. He said he'd never do that again. Now that I'm on the mainland, I'll never evacuate again.

I always take mine with me when I evacuate. I'm far enough inland now however that I doubt I would leave.

I'll only run from a Cat 5 or higher. I've never evacuated. But the Colt .45 has come in handy after. Back when I lived in FL. 2004 and 2005 were pretty hairy.
