You should be fine in New and improved Mexico but stay out of Old Mexico, even if you have a CHL.

The daily shootings/killings in Juarez is a true motivator for carrying a defensive weapon. Though there have been few issues here in El Paso I am sure it is just a matter of time. As a teacher I never thought I would have to tell a student how to get a body of a relative back into the US after their death from a shooting. We pray constantly for our neighbors to the South.

Taken from the
New Mexico DPS website.
Question: If I have my gun holstered in “plain view” on my belt will I be breaking the law?
Answer: New Mexico is an
Open Carry State, meaning it is legal to carry a loaded weapon
as long as it is not concealed. However, it is not legal to carry any firearm in any federal building or school. It is the responsibility of the person carrying the firearm to be informed as to when/where carrying is prohibited.
I thought I understood what open carry meant but does this statement "
as long as it is not concealed" mean you have to open carry in NM?????

You can conceal in your home and car but if you don't have a license you're not allowed to conceal when you're walking around in public in NM.

I believe your instructor is mistaken.
PC §46.02. UNLAWFUL CARRYING WEAPONS. (a) A person commits
an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries
on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the
person is not:
(1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's
control; or
(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned
by the person or under the person's control.
(a-1) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly,
or recklessly carries
on or about his or her person a handgun in a
motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's
control at any time in which:
(1) the handgun is in plain view; or
(2) the person is:
(A) engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class C misdemeanor
that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic;
(B) prohibited by law from possessing a firearm; or
(C) a member of a criminal street gang, as defined by Section
71.01.
...where do you see in my post that the instructor said not to conceal the weapon? He was completely correct...whether the pistol, for instance, is locked in a steel box, or hanging in a saddle bag, as long as it's attached to the motorcycle, and you can get off and walk away and it stays there, and it's not visible...it can hang in a coupla socks from the handlebars...it just has to be concealed...the fact that it might be easy to steal is a given...if the rider's not doing (1) failing to conceal it or (2) (A), (B), or (C)...he's not in violation 46.02 (2) says motor vehicle...and a motorcycle is one of those... where do you see the error????
I was nor referring to the concealed part, but you said:
just renewed...our instructor said in/on the motorcycle...fine...on the person...not fine...saddlebags, vaults made for motorcycles...anyplace ON the bike
The part about not ON your person is incorrect.

...yep...that was corrected on page one...I've made twelve mistakes since then...your way makes more sense...since you can't be IN the motorcycle but it IS a motor vehicle...still looking for a confirmation in others' contacts w/LEO while actually doing that...till then, I'd hang it ON the bike...I KNOW they can't get me for that...
...5 mins later...guess what...guess where ...I put in on search on bing handgun on person on MC under MPA? and it brought up:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=43520" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
...now ain't THAT a thang!!! not documented but at least "official" opinions from state and a local PD...
