I agree. I have carried the 5" 45 double stack concealed under slacks with dress shirt. No problem!

I have an IWB holster for my 5" Springfield (MTAC), but I truly only ever use my OWB Galco Concealable Belt Holster. It actually holds the pistol in tight to my body and I don't have to worry about my pant size. The only issue is that it is a looooong gun, and it requires pretty long shirt tails for it to not be exposed when I sit down, etc. It's actually quite comfortable.*

* Asterisk is for this caveat: It is actually quite comfortable.......if you can stand to wear a holster on your hip at all. Sadly, my back has deteriorated to the point where I can rarely ever stand to wear a belt holster of any kind anymore.

Don't overlook a good quality gunbelt -- it is of huge importance when comfortably carrying larger and heavier handguns.

They put amazing roll markings on the side. They have been known to fetch way more at market than other similarly equipped brands.

I will carry a commander 1911 on occassion - must have a proper belt and holster set up for all day comfort.

A fullsize gun can be a great ccw but you have to put some thought into what you are doing - wardrobe, belt, holster, carry position. When I take these things into account I find carrying a 1911 commander (4.25") comfortable and comforting.

I carry a Commander size normally but that is a weight issue more than a length issue. If you get thin grips and bob the MSH it will almost disappear IWB. The thin grips will make a noticable difference.

I have a 5" Custom SPringer and I carry it every day. Currently I have the Galco Combat Master but as soon as I get back state side I will be going the way of TAM. I am looking at the Galco Concealable Belt or the Galco Quick Slide Belt holster.

The great thing is that with the OWB it is extremely comfortable to stand, sit, crouch or whatever you have to do. With the 1911 being so slim and the cant of the holster I just throw on a t-shirt and I am on my way. I even carry two spare mags OWB on my weak side. In the winter sometimes I will even use my Blackhawk Serpa paddle holster under a jacket or coat.

Bottom line is that with the 1911 (even 5") you can conceal it very easily and very comfortable whether it be IWB or OWB.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. I finally settled on an El Paso Saddlery High Slide (http://www.epsaddlery.com/pc-149-20-high-slide.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). MSRP is $64, but I picked it up at CTD in McKinney for $39 (they had 3 more in stock if anyone in the area is interested). A few things about this holster:

1) The gun sits higher then it did in my Kholster, but still in about the same position as my Sig P220. I'm not sure if it's IWB vs OWB, or just that my Kholster is designed for my Sig, but it's better than I anticipated.

2) This is much, much more comfortable than my Kholster. I'm pretty sure that's going to be the overall difference between IWB & OWB.

3) The gun sits closer to my side than I expected. I've got a DeSantis OWB holster for my Ruger P89 and it sticks out like a sore thumb. I guess I just wasn't expecting an OWB holster to sit this close.

4) I've been wearing it around the house for a few days now and even carried it to Synagogue this past Shabbat. All I can say is I really, really like the feel of this.

How is the draw on it? Also, do you have any problems sitting down (e.g. the gun getting pushed up and out of the holster)?
