This new law will be an important step in keeping us safe going to and from work. Especialy those side trips that have to made on the way home. I will feel safer.

Know your rights and stay quiet.
...we don't get our rights if we stay quiet...we just need to choose our battles wisely...

Not that I know of, and it was meant to be a general comment.

In this case we won, in part due to the right kind of noise made in the past.
However, I see perils in loud celebration.

Amen.
My company's written policy didn't specifically mention the parking garage, so I quietly assumed that leaving my weapon in the car was O.K. It meant a lot to me to have that weapon coming and going to work.

Call me paranoid, but I'm wondering if the protections in this law to prevent firings from still happening. This is still an "at will" employment state. It doesn't take much to find a reason to terminate someone. Good luck proving the actual cause of termination was due to having a firearm in your vehicle.

If you're otherwise needed, you can do no wrong, otherwise you can do no right.
If they need a reason, they'll come up with one gun or otherwise.

I agree with keeping quiet because this law isn’t going to help anyone who works for a company that is hostile to gun owners. The law will bluff some companies into compliance but it isn’t going to keep many from getting fired or let go. This is the best Austin could do in 2011 and that is one sad thought to me. I am glad it was passed and grateful for any lawmaker that tries to help. It is just like putting a band aid on a severed artery in my opinion.

I think it will afford some protection. They are going to have to search your car to find your weapon, and they have to have good reason to search your car. A company may want to work against this law, but I do not think most companies want to spend the money defending their actions in court. I think it will be easier for them to just adopt a "look the other way" manner of thinking. However, time will tell. In a year we will know how this is working based on reports in the news, and on this forum. I don't know when new legislation has to be submitted by, but perhaps glaring gaps in the new law can be fixed in the next legislative session.

question does this law affect places like DOW, or BASF, or are they allowed to still have no gun policies?

Companies are still allowed to have anti-gun policies in their buildings. When it comes to parking lots, it depends on the type of facility. For example, parking at the DOW offices on Enclave Pkwy in West Houston is likely protected by the law. However, the plants on the East side (e.g. Deer Park, La Porte) may meet the requirements for the loophole to prohibit firearms inside a secure area.
IANAL so here's the text:

Last week the no guns signs were moved from the front gate to each buildings entrence. Nothing was published about it in the online news, but in staff call i attend it was mentioned that guns are now allowed in the parking lots , but they want to keep it quiet.
