1. He had no idea what the kids in his house may have done to instigate the problem.
2. If he injures/kills an attacker, how does that affect the safety of his wife, 4 young kids, his house and himself?
Being "dead right" is small consolation. Unfortunate, but, reality.
It doesn't matter what the kids that he was protecting might have done. We are supposed to be a country of laws with the assumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law, not given over to mob violence and the possibility of beating deaths. I do understand that, in some areas and with some ethnic groups, there may be little or no respect for the law, based on past conduct. Mob violence is not a solution to that either.
I agree that his family's safety may have been compromised by his actions. It he cannot petition the local police department for help with that, we've sunk a lot lower as a society than even I believed.
"...supposed to be a country of laws" is a completely different discussion than "How will pulling the trigger affect me and my family tomorrow?"
Apples and oranges, I say. Both are valid concerns, but arguing one against the other is off-point.
I'm not saying I would or would not have pulled a trigger in that mans shoes (although it would seem from the article it would have been justified self defense). I'm just acknowledging that getting involved in anothers troubles, and then getting involved quite deeply in the quagmire of legal and vengeful repercussions that follow pulling the trigger, including potential life-changing repercussions to my family and home, is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Pulling the trigger would not be a question mark for me, If someone kicks in my door...... Assuming I could get to my gun, and I try to keep it close.

Once again, that incident happened in the City of (Not So) Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Where I'M LIVING, here in the State of Texas, would have been a completely different story. Nice of you to put yourselves in that man's shoes, but none of you have the proper amount of cash to get me to actually move there...the residents (voters) of that city and area have helped create a climate where they must fear for their lives in a far more consistent manner than those of us living here. Yeah, trouble can happen ANYWHERE, and that is why we have (getting, want, etc) our CHLs...but its a lot more likely there. I hope those who have moved to Texas from other states that restrict one's rights remember that when you go to the polls. Otherwise, WE here can end up like that place...

...the criminal element everywhere has completely lost respect for their fellow man...that is why we have been forced to arm ourselves and prepare...so that they may at least fear us...and that is not guaranteed...but it's better to be armed and prepared, than to sit there hoping they won't choose us...

I'd protect a 13 year old in those circumstances.
You need to make sure that you let the right 13 year old in your house. Things are not always what they seen OR what you wish they were. Good luck!

I would have protected the two boys running from the mob. I don’t care who did what. Two boys don’t stand much of a chance against a mob.
If they kicked in my door, there would have been a mess. Winchester 12 ga. Defender 3” mag 000 Buck backed up by a Kimber 45 with two spare mags. It’s good it didn’t happen to me.
He really should send his family to stay with relatives for a while and purchase some serious protection.

On second thought, does anyone know where I can pick up a few M18A1’s ?
Just joking.

What would you have done if it happened to you while you were living in that 'hood in Phildelphia?

I would
never live in that 'hood in Phildelphia. I guess that makes it very unlikely anything like this could happen to me.
