But you have to be a resident of Texas for 6 months before you can apply for your Texas CHL.

I carried in TX for 6 years on my FL license, including one FL renewal. I still keep a FL license.
Just need to make certain that once you have a permanent address in TX that you notify FL ASAP.
I don't recall whether FL will automatically end you a new license with the updated address, but I would suggest that you ask for/pay for one so that your FL permit matches your TX drivers license address. Life will be easier, IMO, if you don't have to explain different addresses to a LEO.

As far as getting a TX permit..... I finally got mine about a year ago... Why did I wait?
1. I already had a valid permit (FL), why bother?
2. The TX class is a full day, who has the time for that when you already have a valid permit?
3. A TX license is expensive.... class + license + prints = about $275, IIRC

What made me do it finally?
I travel to CO more frequently these days and CO (as well as a few other states) does not honor a non-resident permit, so my FL carry permit plus my TX DL was a no-go in CO....

You should read the local laws and make your own decision.

This is not correct any longer.
GC §411.173. NONRESIDENT LICENSE. (a) The department by
rule shall establish a procedure for a person who meets the eligibility
requirements of this subchapter other than the residency requirement
established by Section 411.172(a)(1) to obtain a license under this
subchapter if the person is a legal resident of a state another state
or if the person relocates to this state with the intent to establish residency
in this state.
The procedure must include payment of a fee in an
amount sufficient to recover the average cost to the department of
obtaining a criminal history record check and investigation on a
nonresident applicant.

If you are in the south end, then you will be close to the course that is taught by the person who runs this site.
I'll be in Sugar Land. That the south end? :headscratch
No, it's more considered "West". "South" is more like Clear Lake City, League City, Kemah, etc....cities on the path to Galveston.
But he is still less than 30 minutes away from PSC. Mr. Cotton has been involved in nearly every piece pro-gun legislation in Texas since before CHL was passed in 1995. He has great understanding of the twisted penal code and how it related to self defense. If the dates work out for you, I highly recommend taking the course from him - I wish I had.

You can check dates are register here.

You beat me to it....
Here is the correct link to the current document.. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetFo ... CHL-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
FYI... If you search Google, the first link you find is likely to be the OLD document from 2001...

A few things to note:
While FL has a concealed "weapons" Permit, Texas only has concealed "handgun" license ....example: brass knuckles are illegal etc.

I know Texas has reciprocity with Florida... but, for how long can I carry in Texas under my Florida permit once I move there? Can I do it as long as I'd like, or do I have only X number of days to get my Texas permit?
If you change your address to follow Florida law, you're covered until 2013 at least. Knowing that, I suggest taking the Texas class from a great instructor, even if you have to wait a few months for one of their classes that fits your schedule. You won't be unarmed in the meantime, so it's worth the wait for a top instructor who will teach you what they law really means and spend more than 10 minutes on nonviolent dispute resolution.
