:smilelol5: Since I'm the OP, can I take it off topic? "rlol"
(I'm still getting the suggested low-recoil 12 ga ammo, but also ...)
Still thinking out loud ...
The SA-20 looks good so far, maybe a Weatherby SA-459™ TR

One thing I don't comprehend is in Pumps, the capacity can be 8 or so on "tactical" shotguns, but all manufacturers produce "reduced capacity" semi-auto home defense shotguns and you have to locate extension tubes ... oh well.

Comparing Mossberg SA-20 to similar Weatherby SA-459™ TR:

Weatherby SA-459™ TR (TR = Threat Response... because California doesn't like "Tactical" but it's ok to respond to a threat ...so far)
BBl-18-1/2" + "removeable" Extended Ported Cylinder=20"
OAL-39" with extender, 37.5" without extender
**Unknown if stock can be shortened a little too, for shorter OAL ... aftermarket recoil pads?
(Tx penal code chapter 46:
(10) "Short-barrel firearm" means a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches or a shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches, or any weapon made from a shotgun or rifle if, as altered, it has an overall length of less than 26 inches)

Mossberg SA-20
BBl-20" ... front sight prevents cutting
OAL 37"

I'll probably be owning a 20 ga soon .... and keeping the 12 with low recoil ammo in another spot in the house.

:biggrinjester:

Every time I ask for help on ammo ... I buy more guns ... which is a fact a buddy of mine loves who buys unfired guns from me which I bought in the 1980s ... "rlol"

I'm going to quit parting with stuff though, 2 weeks ago I started carrying 2 guns regularly as BUGS (yes I tested them) which I thought I wouldn't carry much P11 and PF9 to back up my Glock 26, and the XD45

(carrying them because I got dultuh trading co 5-pocket jeans with 12" deeper front pockets)

"extended magazine tubes" in 20 ga ... scarce or non-existant .... I see an unfulfilled market here ...
Remington and Benelli models also available for 20 gauge shotguns, all others fit 12 gauge only.

...front sight for house defense is not necessary...I snapped on a coupla flourescent tube plastic sights just to have something...I wouldn't want to shorten either gun you're comparing...stock aids in controlling it...you don't gain much maneuverability by taking 2-4" off the barrel...one of my twenties is a Mossberg 500C Youth model...a slightly shorter stock from the factory...with a 24" vent rib...overall length is fine...5+1...if 6 shots of slugs/buck aren't enough, I'd hope to be behind something to reload...I've owned several 8-shots...they're front-heavy and I don't like how they swing...wouldn't buy another...(unless it was cheap)...

...with a standard forearm, it's easy to throw-cock a shotgun one-handed...hold the forearm firmly..."toss" the gun straight up with barrel to the sky...then jerk it back down and you've got it...a little practice and it's quick...just remember where the hole in the end of the barrel is...try it unloaded till you get it down...been doing it for years...lots easier than trying to hold a flashlight AND a forearm in one hand and pump...we din't have those new-fangled lights and such...

...never say the word "advice" around an old guy...has a cathartic effect...

front sight for house defense is not necessary
true, I agree

throw-cock a shotgun one-handed.
I can do that, have done it, but then I need to switch right hand from forend to trigger, and back and forth (no left hand)
That's why I put the loop forend to operate the pump with left wrist on the pump, and why I'm considering a Semi-auto
I used to have a Rem 100, I sold, it was too big OAL for in my home/turning in narrow hallway.

5+1...if 6 shots of slugs/buck aren't enough
I have a PF9 on my hip (if a 20+1 round Glock isn't there) ... and 'other nearby items' but I really like all the capacity possible in every gun... just because

I don't really intend to cut a barrel, the 18.5" or 20" is ok ... might cut the 20" down to 18.5 and lose the useless sight
Would like slightly shorter stock, not just a pistol grip, not another folder, but maybe an cut inch or so shorter ... 37" is a long way from 26" so I could cut an inch or so on either probably.

Kinda wish I hadn't sold my Rem 1100 with 20" barrel and extended mag tube .. shouldda just trimmed an inch or 2 off the stock and put a better recoil pad on, live and learn ...

shorter left arm is why I preferred shorter oal too, as well as shorter baseball bats .400 batting average in middle school/Jr. high ,,, "youth models" with shorter stocks/ length of pull fit me well in shotguns because of that.

the Mossbergs that we use where I work all have fabric loops for the pump handle.
