...when I was in 2nd grade, folks were leaving the East and going to CA in droves... a man yanked his family up and moved out there because he'd been offered a rich man's salary...$10,000 per year...all we heard was of the booming prosperity out there...sounds like the grass isn't greener...

Well, it might have been greener for a while. Life in California in the 1950s, '60s, '70s and the early '80s was pretty good for a while. Plenty of jobs that paid pretty well, and a reasonable cost of living. Not cheap, but reasonable. It pretty much went to hades after that.
