Finding a suitable home free of that nonsense has been a lengthy process. I also need to be within an hour of the UT Medical Center in San Antonio where I have an appointment for a lung transplant in the indeterminate future, as I have pulmonary fibrosis.
Extra Class amateur radio op and VE here. We're on acreage in the hill country and can do anything we want with the property, but I'm not active; maybe when we slow down I'll get back on the air. You will almost be neighbors to us (in Texas terms!) Congratulations for escaping from Kalifornia :txflag: and welcome back to God's country.

Edit: I'm a ham VE and not a VEC. Have to be accurate ;-)

Praise Jesus! We're leaving California today to head back to Texas. We have to take I-10 this time due to a winter storm passing through northern Arizona today.

Welcome home. Out of curiosity, what made you stay in California so long?

Brag, brag, brag! Leave some bar-b-q for us late-comers! ;-)

After graduating from UT, I got shore duty in Coronado as a brand new Navy officer, in the middle of the VN war. When I got out I married a San Diego native and my attempt to return to Austin was unsuccessful. You can't get a San Diego native to live somewhere else. The weather everywhere else is worse, there are bugs, no beaches, bad weather, etc. Anyway, I went to law school here, gradually established a practice, ran a real estate investment firm and some other businesses here, and here we are.

Now, with the ravages of old age and decrepitude making their unhappy presence felt, it's time to hightail it back. I started thinking about this years ago, and stayed to finish up the real estate projects, and what I should have done was dump all of it and get the hell out. Quite a few millions of dollars evaporated in that decision!

Now before someone wonders why the wife who wouldn't live in Texas then will now, I switched wives.

"I could go to heck or New York City
They're about the same to me.

If heaven ain't a lot like Texas, I don't want to go."

A country song.

Welcome back friend.

Hey movin just down the road from me. Another radio operator here.

I was also stationed in Coronado, but San Diego native wife went along willingly.

Actually I'm from LA, so we did a rendition of "Escape from LA"..

We've gone back once for a visit, and agreed we don't miss the traffic, high prices, rude drivers.....

Actually, based upon my few trips out to San Diego, if I could afford to live there, I probably would have, in '76 when my wife and I were thinking about it (the Air Force and I were just about to part ways). You gotta admit the weather there IS almost perfect, and the ocean makes up for a lot of sins of the interior of the county. Alas, home called, and Fort Worth was on the destination. We haven't regretted our decision, especially after seeing how the real estate markets there have utterly self-destructed, but when we do get out to San Diego, it IS nice to be able to visit.

By the way, one of the biggest differences you'll notice is that the HF bands close down here much earlier than on the left coast. It's amazing the difference in propagation you'll fine.

73 and welcome home!

Thanks. I was a ham in the hill country from 1959 until I was sent out here. The 6's and the 4's had all the propagation. ;-) That was several cycles ago, though.

We live in Coronado, right on the water, with the ocean less than a quarter mile away. The weather is ideal, a bit cold if anything. We have no air conditioning in our house, nor is one needed. If that was all there was to enjoying life, we'd have it made.

Our house sold for $1 million less than it would have easily sold for 5 years ago. Some would argue that it shouldn't have sold for that much to start with, but there is no place south of Balboa Island, Newport Beach in Orange County where you can have your boat at the dock in your back yard. Old age and decrepitude has lessened the appeal of that for me now.

I need not recite all the social factors that make living here unappealing. The admins would probably kick me off the site anyway. It'll be good to be home, even if it is over 100F. We were back there over last summer starting to look for lots etc. and it sure was hot! Probably have to buy a raincoat, too, and some winter clothes. The coldest overnight low here since I've lived here as been 37. That was once. Low-40's is uncommon but sometimes happens.

I'll buy a place back there, put up some antennas and enjoy my declining years, hopefully.

I was just back on Coranado & the rest of San Diego just a few weeks ago visiting some buddies. I know that area well, having spent 4 or my 6 years in the Navy in SWCC, over on the SpecWar base.

I do miss San Diego sometimes, but like you said--there is more to it than the weather. I also miss my job. I do not miss the extremely liberal lifestyle of SoCal however, and am happy to be back home in Texas. I would be lying if I said I dont miss the Taco Shops all over SD, especially the one located at the end of the strand...the name slips me now.

Other side of the token-my wife will be applying to SDSU's pharmacy program here in the next 6 months, and if she gets accepted I'm afraid that I will not be able to fight moving back there for her to go to school. Like your wife, she is also a San Diego native..sorta. She was born & raised in the PI, but her family immigrated here in 2006 to San Diego, then to LA. I met her in San Diego, and she missex it dearly.

I'm happy you were able to sell your house, even under market value you are fortunate. Housing in Coranado in particular is expensive, and the current economy probably doesn't help too much. If you were that close to the beach with a dock and boat, I am truly sorry that we haven't met till now. I never did find myself a friend with a beach house... would have been nice to sit on the grassy beaches of those houses and sip cold beer and fish.

All said, congrats and come on back to TX. Everyone here will be happy your back.
