Hmmmm. My military training was heavy in handgun training. But my butter bar days were long ago and things do change.
Neice was in NG 3 years full-time. She never shot a single handgun, long gun only. A Buddy was in Army, he said officers got handgun, but in basic he shot one mag of a .45 and that was it. I worked with a fellow in the Air Force and no handgun. In my Basic Handgun 101 class I have had several military who didn't know handgun. Not insulting them, I realize each is specialized in certain areas...but it torques me when I hear folks say only trained people like police and military should carry... it assumes I haven't had as much training and assumes they have had handgun training.

One thing is certain. Those who believe this have probably not had nearly as much training as they would have you believe.

...you ain't wrong, there!!! I griped because I only got to fire the Colt .45 one time in the Corps...my boys, before they went to Iraq together a year or so ago, got 0 training in knives and weren't even issued a bayonet...Army for sure don't do it like the Corps did...

I was in the Navy and got NO---ZERO-ZIP-NONE-training in firearms!!! Course this was 100 years ago when women weren't "allowed" in combat! The only time I ever fired a gun while I was in the Navy was one time when the Marines were qualifying--they required a corpsman on the range. After they finished, the guy who was running it let me fire

So what we are saying is that a person shouldn't be allowed to carry a gun unless they are trained as good as CHL-ers are!

The people who believe that only military and police should be the only ones with handguns don't know squat! I was in the army for several years, like about 14. I did have knife training not just bayonet, I did have handgun training, machinegun, heavy machinegun and rifle training as well as several other types of weapons. However this is not the norm as most soldiers are given basic rifle training and nothing else.

And too, remember often what they are taught to do is different from what CHL-ers do. LEO's are about apprehending, closing in, etc. We are defensive and try to move away and make space. In the shooting schools, we excercised shooting at targets while moving backwards. LEO's shooting moving in.

A number of people assume that ALL military has firearms training. I was in the USAF for 24 years and the truth of the matter is you get to fire an M16 in basic training (usually with a .22 conversion kit) and that is about it unless you are in a career field that requires additional firearms training (law enforcement, pararescue, etc).
If you are lucky and get stationed overseas, you will need to qualify again before going overseas. Most USAF folks shoot an M16 in basic training and that is the extent of their firearms education.
Even those folks who are in firearms related career field may not get that much training. We had a "Gun Club" in Germany composed of all services and DOD civilians. We would have matches against German military teams and on occasion our own USA special forces. Usually what we did was go to the range as a club and qualify on the upcoming course of fire. Whomever were the top four shooters would represent the club at the next competition.
One day we had an event and a number of club members showed up to qualify. One guy was a USA Military Policeman who brought his issued sidearm. The course of fire was slow fire bullseye at 25 meters. Out of a possible score of 50, this guy got a 2!!! Not only that, but he shot the legs out of one of our targets and we had to get a new target stand to finish!!!
As I said, many inaccurate assumptions about military firearms training out there...

...I suspect the military's dumbed down to make it easier on the dumb ones...instead of holding up the excellent ones and challenging us to reach up to their level of expertise...it fits with the rest of gooberment these days...we qualified with the M14, famfired the .45, M60, LAAWS, rocket launcher, then qualified with the M16...and no .22 rimfire ammo...they took things seriously back then...some of us still do...

I got to shoot about 10 rounds of 9mm from a handgun in boot back in 1983 and no rifle at all. If one's job doesn't include the use of a weapon you're not going to get trained with one or be required to qualify with one.

I took care of electronics on F-14 Tomcats in The Navy. After boot camp I never handled another gun while I was in.

This is really a case of "thread drift". This is not surprising. I have read that for every one combatant, there are nine people supporting them.
