20 years since 1st dismissed assault.
8 years since last dismissed assault.

fishman wrote:OK so it's been 8 years since your last arrest, but it was 12 years since the 1st assault. Traffic tickets in between, correct?

Only convictions count. You can be arrested 100 times, and still get a CHL.

You do not have any disqualifiers, based on what you have reported here. Your only problem will be that you need to report each of these incidents on your application, and it will take DPS some time to process all this.

Good luck to you!

It sounds like your on the right road. I hope so. I think I can speak for many CHLers when I hear about someone reacting in a bad way with a gun, I always hope they don't have a CHL. Ussually they don't.Stick around on this forum, there is a lot to be learned here.

There is a difference between warrants for unpaid tickets and arrests for tickets.

Were you cuffed, taken down town and booked, or did you just get a nice letter informing you of a warrant then pay it?

You may be able to obtain one legally, but I think the DWI conviction and repeated aggravated assault arrests may you a poor candidate. I find the length of time between arrests particularly disturbing, as it indicates that problems finding expression as a youth are still problems years later. The ten years between assault arrests suggest that you have difficulty controlling your anger and may lash out again even after many years have passed. Forget about the law, you need to be completely honest with yourself, and think about how those incidents leading to arrest for assault may have turned out had you been carrying a gun. A lack of self-control while armed, even for a brief instant, may destroy your life and cause great harm to your family --even if no one is killed or injured.

Edit:

I missed your explanation of the assault charges before I responded. I think my question is still relevant, but as you describe the situation, it seems that you may be more a victim of circumstances with the assault charges. Still, your repeated arrests and traffic warrants seem to indicate you have little respect for the law. I think there is an extra duty to be scrupulous about obeying the law when you are licensed to carry a gun, not only in the public interest (the rest of us with CHL's especially as your behavior will reflect on this community), but in your own self-interest, as the system may look at you with greater scrutiny. For example, just read of a case in Florida where a homeowner shot a thief. The thief was out on probation after being convicted of attempted murder by shooting into a building --after time served prior to trial. Somehow, I think if he'd done that with a CHL, he'd still be doing time.

No preaching here - - - I see nothing that would be a disqualifier. Jobs! Give me a break! I was a construction electrician and some years I had as many as five jobs. My job listing took up three pages. Addresses they changed almost as often as my jobs.

Good luck and carry safely.

You guys need to cut the newbie some slack. :totap: Sometimes things look worse in print than they are in real life.

We have ALL done things we were not proud of. Just some of us are better at getting caught then others.

I agree that there do not seem to be any disqualifiers. I too had two citations that turned into an arrest in my past. One thing that I did was to go down to the municipal court where the warrent was out of and get a copy of the case disposition (showing that it has all been taken care of). I mailed that in with my application, I'm told that it helps to do so and prevents your background check being held up in Podunk USA. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Your introduction may have started a little rocky, but this is a great group of folks with a ton of knowledge to share.

Same question I asked the OP. Were you cuffed and booked? Or did you just get a letter notifying you of a warrant out FOR your arrest?

I was pretty sure a warrant and an arrest were 2 different things......am I wrong?

A warrant is an order to arrest someone. An arrest is when you are "cuffed 'n stuffed." If you have outstanding warrants and you have some dealings with an LEO (traffic etc,) and your ID is run and the warrant comes up then you are "cuffed 'n stuffed." They are similar but not the same.

I was actually cuffed and stuffed. I was not aware of the warrent (long story) and got hooked up on a traffic stop.

You already applied so be patient. We can guess but DPS will give you the right answer in 90 days or less.

Gotcha. So unless the OP was actually cuffed and stuffed 6 times for traffic warrants, he may only have 4 actual arrests.

I too have had a traffic warrant out at one time. But I got lucky and found out about it and paid it before I interacted with any officers.
