From a business perspective if you charge a $20 rental fee then after 20 students rent it then a $400 gun is paid for and turning a profit.
It is nice to see when ugly guns was mentioned that Glocks came up often, they don't get much uglier....

.... The Sig 2022 was a good suggestion and my only issue would be they are a slight pain to break down to clean, we own one and that is my only knock on the gun. Also think about what trigger you want in a rental gun, my suggestion would be a DAO and keep everything consistant. You can get a Sig 250 in the upper $300 range and it has a great DAO trigger and will run forever. Good luck in your search, wish I had something used to help you out with
I think this is a good suggestion. Get a good used G17 for around $400 or $450. You will actually be turing a profit on this from day 1 since the resale value will be about what you paid for it. Seems like a solid return on investment (ROI) to quote a business term. If you have a class every other week, and someone rents your Glock at each class for $20, then you get an ROI of 5% every other week, or 10% a month, 120% a year. At that rate, you should want to have as many people as possible showing up without a firearm. Come to think of it, if your classes get enough people, then you might have 2 range sessions (mine did), in which case you could get 2 rentals per class from the same gun, and double your profit
One thing to consider is that the range you are using might not like the added competition from your gun rental business, but then again I am guessing that any such range does not have guns for rent since if they did, you wouldn't have this need in the first place.

Liking the idea.... and you are correct, no gun rentals at our range.

Hmm... They certainly are ugly, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a working 9mm pistol for a lower price. I've heard they have rough triggers, which would probably work against someone who'd never fired a gun before.
You got me thinking about new guns that are merely inexpensive or on sale, though. Looking through CDNN's complete catalog there are several sub-$400, non-subcombact, 9mm pistols:
Sig
- P250 Compact for $340
- SP2022 for $370
Taurus
- PT709 Slim Compact for $300
- PT709 Slim Compact Bi-Tone for $320
American Tactical (never heard of them)
- 92C Centurion for $300
- HP9 for $330
- FS9 for $280
- CS9 for $280
(I'm not affiliated with CDNN or anything, I just like looking through their catalogs.)
And those of you mentioning cheaper new guns are correct...they are out there. I am thinking used as they are broken in. Rather not having them with break-in issues trying to qualify. Not to mention usually easier to rack once broken in. Gotten numerous elderly folks who could barely rack a slide.
Used guns, unless you know the seller, are a crapshoot at best. A used gun may be broken down or a lemon, with a new gun you get to break it in yourself and you know that it's well maintained.

Maybe I have been lucky thus far, but had better luck with a used one than new. Probably 1/3 of the time I get a new one I have to send back for something soon after purchase.

Do you get to Austin? GT Distributors sometimes has good deals on police trade-ins.

I am close enough I could drive down there. Is that the place that you have to have a peace officers license to buy though?

You don't have to be a cop to buy used guns there. See
http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.asp ... -GLOCK22G3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
However, some new gun sales are restricted because of their agreement with the manufacturer or distributor.

If you rent the guns, do you have to collect sales tax? And if you sell ammo to go with them?
It may be better to present it as the all-inclusive class package - charge a higher class fee for a package that includes "free use" of the gun and ammo.

Yes. Sales tax applies to rental fees and ammo sales.

I bought a broken down G23. Sent it to Glock, now I have a pretty new G23 and for much less than what a new G23 cost.

I have only bought three new guns in my young life. The years I spent as an LEO I never bought a new gun. I have also NEVER bought a lemon.
I am not sure about others, but if I had a lemon I would not sell without full disclosure. As for as I can tell most responsible gun owners are of the same opinion.

EXACTLY this... we have had this discussion on here before but I would never sell a problem gun. I might send it back to manufacturer a dozen times... then ones finding it to be ok, sell it because I've lost confidence. I'm not about to have on my conscience the possibility of someone killed because the gun malfunctioned when they needed it. As you, I have purchased numerous used and not a lemon in the bunch. I did once buy a used gun online and the sights were not what was advertised in the stock picture, but he did offer to take it back.

You are doing this for income right?
I'm a marketing guy. Here's what I'd do:
Pick a gun out at your dealer of choice, and decide how many to buy.
Seek out the manager, explain what you are doing.
Tell him you want his absolute best price in exchange for marketing:
At each class you tell them you have guns available to rent, show them the pistol, explain the features/functions, and tell them the price and where to get them. Offer them a card from the store with your own stamped info on the back. If possible you could have the store information put on the gun somehow.
Then rent them for $10 plus sell them ammo.
You might even work a deal to give them their rent payment back as a $10 coupon toward the purchase of the gun at the store. that would give the store manager additional feedback.
