That saying comes from old bear hands and doesn't refer to the bear's ingestion of the .380, but where the bear is likely to place it after it's used on him.

Hint: The pain referred to is the shooter's, not the bear's.

I carry a .380 when my .40 cal is not suitable for the situation.

If I were in a bear-rich environment, neither of the above would be suitable.
