It was an unstoppable video with a doomsday message. I sat through about 5 minutes and no point was made except the end of the life as we know it is coming.

The unfortunate part is that there is enough bad financial karma right now to make a financial doomsday scenario more plausible than it might have been 5 years ago. I judged the video to be about an opportunist who was playing on that kind of sentiment.

The world as we know it IS going to end some day. The Bible says so, and I believe it. But I don't believe it will be in 2013.

The world as we know it ends every evening. It's just one step at a time, and we fail to notice it.

Remember when there was only AM radio unless you wanted to listen to classical music? Remember when there were three or five TV channels, and you changed the channel by turning a knob that actually took a calorie or two to move? Remember when men would get a job at the car factory or steel mill and work there for 35 years? Remember when out-of-wedlock pregnancy was considered a scandal instead of a lifestyle option? Remember life before Al Gore invented the internet?

Remember when kids were respectful to their elders and did all their chores without nagging? :smilelol5:

I am a little concerned that the Mayans DID know the world ends in 2012. I think they just got the month and date wrong and it is gonna happen November 6th. :banghead:

The Mayans didn't get around to inventing the wheel or the arch. I don't know why anyone would think they had some special wisdom.

"Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice." Robert Frost

Societies have risen and fallen since the beginning of recorded history and I believe it is a bit arrogant to presume that our society could not fall as well whether it is due to natural calamities for the evil of man. Anyone who claims to know the time and date is delusional or fear-mongering for profit. My belief is that modern civilization will come to an inevitable end and I attempt to be reasonably prepared in the event it happens in my life time, but I also understand that my personal world is in danger of ending every time I get on the freeway, so I try to keep my fears in perspective.

I firmly believe we will see some sort of economic upheaval in the next several years. No matter who wins this next election, there are numerous external forces which will affect us, such as the Euro crisis, Russia threatening to bomb our missile sites in eastern Europe, the Chinese rattling their sabers at the Philippines and Taiwan, muslim extremists taking over Egypt and going to war with Israel, etc.

Think about this: China goes to war with Taiwan, as they've been threatening for 60 years. We are treaty bound to defend Taiwan. If we do defend Taiwan (never mind that we are stretched so thin militarily that I doubt we could), think of the exports we depend on that come from China that would come to a screeching halt. That, in itself, will cause crippling shortages for numerous things.

Even if it's less serious than what I'm expecting, we will still be looking at upward inflationary pressure and possible shortages of many staples if the economy continues on its current path - a path that (I believe) is unavoidable.

Have the Russians actually threatened to bomb our missile sites, or do they just never let a day go by without complaining about them?

Now that's one thing I'm not worried about. If we go to war with China, they probably won't be able to collect on our debt to them. We are spread thin militarily, but $5 says our troops will be pulled out of the Middle East if it looks like China's going to invade us. You can say what you want about the wisdom of setting the DOD's budget as high as we have, but one of the results is that we're fairly unbeatable in a traditional war.

If the United States officially follows the One China policy fiction, how can we be treaty bound to a country that officially doesn't exist?
