As upset as we are that the dog died, we couldn't be half as mad at the handler as he likely is with himself.

Terrible mistake.
I'm not sure what your point about the coats are. They are similar in that they are double layered, but other than that they quite different.

They were left in the car overnight. I guess that means that after work, when he went home he forgot that the two officers/dogs were in the car. While I have the smallest of understanding how someone can do this with a sleeping or quiet baby, I completely fail to comprehend how this is done with one and even less so two dogs. If it were unintentional, I do feel very badly for the guy. I just have a hard time imagining how you forget two dogs INSIDE your car.

You think not? Want to place a bet on that? Want to see how mad "we" can be, or the MWD rescue orginzations that will be contacted?

Terrible accident

This is an alleged CRIME not an accident, this is no more an accident then a negligent discharge is.. This was a crime committed.(alleged, crime I admit) . Do I think the alleged criminal is remorseful? Yes I do, No sane canine handler I have ever met, even our contractors.. would wish this on there partner.

How can you forget not one but two dogs/officers the back seat of a K-9 Unit, with the A/C off, knowing that they have a very hard time with heat and humidity since they have two coats of hair and weigh 50 to 100 pounds each depending on the breed (GSD/Malinois)?

How can you kill two of your partners who, per department policy in most agencies, will go into harms way before you do?

If sustained on by Bexar County SO IAD, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Just my .02,

I'm thinking about something. Out of all the people that forget babies or children in their cars that die this very same way, how many of those are actually charged with anything? There's probably some, but I'll bet that not that many are.

Amended to say that as long as it really was an accident and not for some stupid reason like they left them in there while they went into the bar for a couple of drinks and thought they would be okay for 5-10 minutes, but were really in there for 2 hours. No, I'm not talking about those fools. I mean people that really honestly forgot.

I'm having a problem with this also. There must have been something really 'heavy on his mind' to forget TWO (count 'em, 2) dogs left in the car....to die.

Mistake? How do you FORGET your dog? :headscratch Being a LEO shouldn't excuse him from being charged.

I don't doubt it was not done with malice in mind.. Maybe not his partners, just transporting them, and he thought the handlers were going to collect them... Perhaps the car was running when left, and ran out of gas, killing the AC later.. No handler is going to leave the K9 in a hot car in the summer with out AC.. or none that I have met.

Im sure this guy feels like crap, Im also sure if the story is accurate, he is a criminal, should be prosecuted, and should not have a job as a LEO.

No different then if he had left his human partner to die in the heat because he "forgot them"

There are accidents, where our partners, Soldiers, fellow LEO's die that should not be prosecuted. .. Ricochets, rounds that penetrate a wall or cover and strike another, weapon goes off in a struggle with an actor and rounds strikes a partner, trips, falls, car accidents, many reasons Im sure.. but "forgetting" your partner?

This is an alleged crime, the LEO is not guilty until investigated, charged, prosecuted and found guilt.. We give criminals that much, a LEO that has served on the forced for 23 years honorable (my assumption) deserves the same. :thumbs2:

More often that not I think people will and should face charges for this. I am, however, remembering that there are times when someone is not charged for doing this. I also think this is just horrible, but if he honestly forgot them (I still don't know how!) then I'm having a difficult time justifying ruining his life and career to punish him legally. I'm glad it is not up to me to make that choice.

I agree but I promise you that if it were a civilian that had done this, and LEO found the dog, the civilian would be charged with at least animal cruelty.

What we dont know is how many times does this happen, LEO or not, that is not reported.

A few years ago, a Dallas PD police dog died in the cruiser when his handler returned from
work in the late afternoon, on a hot day, and forgot him in there.

A neighbor noticed interior lights left on in the cruiser and knocked on the LEO's door to let him know.

Apparently the dog had managed to get into the front seat, and ended up turning the dome light or other light
while he was in distress. What a sad way to kill your partner - simple absent-mindedness.

********************************************************************************************************************************************

With regard to the Bexar County LEO - Since when does a K-9 officer have TWO dogs?

I think I'll call it irresponsible negligence....

I don't understand this. If you have a dog, you have a feeding time, an exercise time, a petting time, etc.. If the dog(s) are not there you will wonder where they are or what they are into. Like a small child when it gets quiet, it sets off mental alarms. Dogs wonder around the house and lay down here and there, but every little while check on you and a person should miss that kind of activity. If you have a dog among the last things you do at night before going to bed is take the dog out for a dump and spray. The same the next morning. I don't understand how a person can leave a kid in the car either.

by The Annoyed Man
When my dad was at Iwo Jima, he rallied 6 other survivors who were trapped in Cushman's Pocket with him, and after about 36 hours trapped behind Japanese lines, led them in the dark of night out to a point just outside of the marine front lines. Because all but 1 of the 7 were wounded (my dad included), he sent the one guy who was not hurt to advance the rest of the way into the lines, identify himself, let them know that there were wounded just a few yards away who needed immediate help, and get some stretcher bearers out to them. A long time passed, and help never came. My father feared that the guy had been killed or wounded by nervous sentries, so he crawled the rest of the way in on his back (he had a substantial traumatic open wound on his front), challenged the sentries, and got help organized and on the way out to the rest of the men. Only then did he allow himself to be carried a few yards back behind the lines to an aid station............where he found the unhurt guy he had originally sent for help, sitting there having a cup of hot coffee. That guy was so relieved when he passed back through the marine lines to be alive and unhurt that he completely forgot to get some help organized for my dad and the other five and just left them out there to die.

Years later, when I was in high school, that guy came through the town where we lived and he looked my dad up and phoned him, inviting him out for a drink. Dad declined the offer. He didn't get real angry or upset, he just told me that he had nothing to say to the guy and didn't see any point in meeting him.

The word he used to describe this guy and people like him is "feckless."
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/feckless
feck·less   [fek-lis]
adjective
1. ineffective; incompetent; futile: feckless attempts to repair the plumbing.
2. having no sense of responsibility; indifferent; lazy.
Feckless would describe the officer in question here, no matter how badly he might feel about what he did. He might be in every other way in his life a well organized and thoughtful person. But on this day, when the life of those two dogs hung in the balance, he was feckless.
