Local police are not making federal charges.
Now, if I was a drug dealer getting arrested by the DEA, then an add-on firearm charge would be more probable.

Are you saying that people have to break multiple laws before being arrested? Or that the United States Attorney’s Office has never hired an overzealous prosecutor who decided to make an example out of someone who really didn't deserve it?

I am saying it is extraordinarily rarely enforced. I've only heard of one instance in the last decade, except as add-on charges. And I have been keeping current with gun news on various forums for a long time.
When I moved to Texas and was carrying here on a different state's license until I got my Texas CHL, I passed within an unknowable number of school zones simply driving around the city every day. Not only me, but presumably millions of Texans with a gun in the car under MPA drive within 1000 feet of a school every day. The law is completely impractical and impossible to comply with.
