I just want to make it clear that I've been requesting information regarding the Federal requirements to qualify to purchase a handgun. I was NOT expressing any opinions regarding who should or should not be allowed to possess them. Not that anybody has accused me of that! :eek6 :cheers2:

That's an interesting situation you and many others are in. A right given to us by God, that is regulated by man. And I'd bet that those guys that said you shouldn't be allowed to have a CHL would probbaly argue the 2A is a God given right, just not yours. Morons!

I don't know where the laws sit on this one, but IMHO you should be able to own a firearm and get a CHL in Texas.

Thanks c-dub, my take on it (and this applies in my view for any immigrant to any country including my own) is that if one pays taxes, is there legally, and obeys the laws of that country, as they have to take on the same responsibilities that the country they are resident in expects of them, then surely that person is entitled to the full protection that the laws of his residents allow (regardless of current immigrant status)

Expat89 wrote:Hello all!

Been lurking for a while and thought I'd say hello!

I recently moved here from overseas on an l1 visa with work, and shot regularly back in my home country, so Texas is like heaven to me! I've been to ranges here a few time, and eventually plan on getting my chl once I feel comfortable enough with handguns (banned in my home nation)

Now my next question is mainly for other expats, although us nationals please I'd welcome your views! Anyway I was at a range local to me, and got chatting to a couple of guys there, they mentioned they both had chl's and as the conversation went on I mentioned I was thinking of getting one (now the next bit please do not think I'm am generalizing/stereotyping, I've found texans and particularly the shooting community to be the most welcoming and helpful people I have ever met) any way the atmosphere quickly changed, including being told in no uncertain terms by one of the gentleman that 'he doesn't think outsiders should be allowed to carry' ...... So my question is, im curious to know have any of the other expats on here ever found similar attitudes toward them carrying or (and as I mentioned above I'm absolutely sure this will be the case) am I a isolated case!

Thanks in advance !

Ex
Expat here also ...... i would be pleased to offer up any help and advise that you might need from firearm purchase requirements to CHL etc ...... been through the mill and came out the other side smiling :txflag:

You don't have to be a citizen, simply a legal resident. However, I believe you also need a hunting license for some strange reason, either to buy a gun or get a CHL or something like that. I'm not sure why I'm thinking a hunting license comes in to play somehow, but it's there tickling my brain.

Can anyone else chime in on this? If you're a non-citizen, but a legal resident, is a hunting license necessary for either purchasing a gun or obtaining a CHL?
Absolutely correct a hunting liscence acts as the "exception" to buy a gun and apply for a CHL ........ only other documents required are Texas DL and I-94 entry card number

Green Card holder here. I've been on a number of forums where there's a firm belief among a certain subset that the 2nd Amendment should only apply to citizens. I imagine they also don't want us to have freedom of speech, religion, protection against illegal search & seizure, and so on - even though we're here quite legally, pay taxes, etc.

In person - nobody has ever said anything of the sort to my face, perhaps because I can - without bragging - out-shoot most of them anyway *shrug*

Welcome aboard, Ex - just about all of the folks here are warm and welcoming :cheers2:
Andy .... i have come across the same attitude .......... well if i cant have them in their country ... they should not be allowed them in mine ...... i dont agree with this but thats how some people think . The truth is that in these comtries ..... e.g UK ..... "nobody" can have them so its not a them and us situation. I believe if the "country" allows then it should be the same for every law abiding person who lives there or is allowed to live there. :txflag:
