your not actually saluting the recipient but the honor(medal) and the actions of the person. all MOH recipients will tell you that they didn't do anything that anyone else wouldn't have done. I have met several and they are the most down to earth people you'd ever meet.

I am not sure if the army has a regulation, how ever if I ever see one of my soldiers not giving honor then they will get smoked till I'm tired and all I'm going to do is stand there and give them what for, so its gonna be a long day.

I think a lot of courtesy or tradition that was observed in the old break starch military is now being put into regulation because of the lack of knowledge and observing by the younger BDU military.

How did this thread become about the TROOPS not rendering proper salutes? This was about the current POTUS not RETURNING a salute. Just sayin'...

I seem to remember the obamanation returning those salutes early on, but soon tired of them.

I have never met a MOH recipient. I'm relatively sure that if I ever did notice upon meeting someone that they were one I would probably snap to attention and offer them a hand shake and a "thank you." I doubt I ever will meet one, but you never know. Does Chris Kyle have one? Doesn't he live in the DFW area?

AR 600-25 Salutes, Honors, and Visits of Courtesy
Para 1-5
The President of the United States, as the commander in chief, will be saluted by Army personnel in uniform.
The junior person shall salute first. Accompanying the rendering of the hand salute with an appropriate greeting
such as, "Good Morning, Sir" or "Good Morning, Ma’am" is encouraged. Personnel will not salute indoors except
when reporting to a superior officer.
So as all in the Army are "junior" to the commander in chief, they salute, and upon that salute the senior person is obligated to return the salute.

Of course the Army Reg does not apply to the POTUS
Applicability. This regulation applies to
t h e A c t i v e A r m y , t h e A r m y N a t i o n a l
Guard of the United States, and the U.S.
Army Reserve.
So, back to square one. He should as a matter of respect, he does not for the same reasons.

I'm definitely not an Obama fan, but I think that this is one of those cases when he would be darned if he did and darned if he didn't.

But I do believe that he has no respect for the military. Or the flag. Or the Constitution.

Slight drift.

All the citations I have read say, "The President, in the name of Congress,..."
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress.

Kyle has several Silver Stars and several Bronze Stars but no MOH.

I have only met two MOH recipients that I know of, although here in Coronado with as many retired types etc, there may be others. I had the honor to meet Admiral Stockdale who spoke at the funeral of a friend of mine, both long time POWs.

The other was when I was on active duty back in the late '60's. We had a change of command and officers had to attend in full dress whites, swords, gloves, medals the whole package. The senior in our chain of command was a Vice Admiral who had a MOH. IIRC from WWII service. Later at the reception at the "O" Club, we all went through the receiving line. There are few things more impressive than a distinguished looking, fit man in dress whites, gold shoulder boards and the blue ribbon of a MOH around his neck. He was an older gentleman in his late 50's probably!

In the Navy, one doesn't salute if uncovered (no hat!).

According to the USAF:
AFPAM 34-1202 wrote:Although awarded "in the name of Congress," this decoration is properly known as the
"Medal of Honor," not the "Congressional Medal of Honor."

Gainesville has a neat event each Spring. They invite every MOH recipient to a weekend that features a parade and other events. I think they had 13 MOH recipients attend this past year.
