BTW, conspiracy defendants often try to use a free-speech or "just kidding" defense. Lately "role playing" is a defense.

On that basis, a group of people could perform every planning step of a crime like bank robbery or kidnapping, including buying legal weapons, photographing sites and victims, and establishing getaway routes and a safe house.

Grand juries indict people for that kind of behavior all the time.

As for the cannibal cop...as mentioned earlier, wouldn't surprise me to find out he had done some weird things before that haven't been uncovered yet. As for his co-conspirators, they might not be in the US. Remember those German guys who made a deal that one would kill and eat the other? They got together for through a cannibal website. Supposedly the cannibal became a vegetarian after he was caught and put in prison.

This fine gentleman is on trial in federal court. His estranged wife, who is the mother of his child, testified on the witness stand about her observations of his alleged obsession about killing, cooking, and eating women.
