I agree that kids won't be as vigilant. Part of the problem these days IMO is too many parents cut kids too much slack and they don't learn responsibility or vigilance. I think they need to be taught more.

Bottom line, if you let an adolescent out on their own, then they need to be taught to be alert and watching for dangers. Kids learn from lessons, hopefully he learned from this one. Luckily this one ended with no one being hurt, just loss of property.
I would add "accountability" to Keith's comments. Sooner or later, everyone learns that actions, in this case inactions, have consequences. If Patrick had looked both ways twice, before stepping onto the road that fateful day, he might be alive today.
