Same thing at the NorCal range I went to. And same thing at QC, too.
Same at Elm Fork

I moved to the country and now I've got my own range.

I wish I had the luxury of shooting on my land. I guess buying land would be the first step towards that goal! lol

Don't despair, it took me 30 years to get to this point.

Idiots. Cold range means unload and hands off weapons. It's not rocket science. I've never been to a public outdoor range and I still know that. I swear common sense is few and far between nowadays.

No RO's at Texas Star, and the 1/2 dozen times I have shot there, it has not been an issue.
Small range, small user base never had an issue on the Pistol, steel side or long rifle lanes.
But, of course it only takes once..... I would have been less nice.... and had a talk with the range owner.

Yup, those guys are like drill sergeants, I try to go there during the week, as no ones there and you can call your own cease fire. If people are there then they tend to be on the level.
There is one great big older RO who told me that the action on my pistols needed to be locked back during a cease-fire. He then asked me if I knew how to lock back the slide.

You are definitely not the jerk for pointing it out, there is no forgiveness when ignorantly mishandling a weapon IMO. Learn the rules, figure out what you are doing, and then partake. Do not endanger me or my loved ones, if you are I will firmly let you know not to.
A couple times now At a local indoor range I have run into people openly racking, inspecting, or whatever they were doing in the waiting area. It is clearly displayed that is is not ok and with most accidents happening with an unloaded weapon, they knew quickly that I was not ok with it.
