We all know that whatever gun I get him it won't be his last. Plus he will always have easy access to Dad's safe. I just don't want to give him something that he knows I already had. Kinda stupid because every firearm I own I bought with the intention of giving to my kids.

I see this as more of a ceremonial right of passage kind of deal. I already have 2 j frames and a Colt snub he could have plus my various 1911's. It sure helps to type things out.............I'm going to get him a 1911. If he wants a snub he can get one of mine.

He will love it!! Great choice... IMHO. I love my 1911's . I just thought of something that might be cool. The other day someone posted up about a limited edition battleship of Texas 1911. I don't know what you want to spend but those were real nice.

Joey - A 1911 is a great choice! I gave an STI Trojan to my youngest son three years ago for Xmas. Having shot several of my STI pistols with me for years he was already in love with 1911s. We shoot together for fun and in competition. He graduates from college this year and for a graduation present he's getting another STI that I know he has been drooling over.

Both my wife and our two sons have been shooting together for years. We also all have our CHLs and are NRA members. I guess we're just another one of those families of gun nuts that are a danger to society. Married for 34 years and have two college educated sons. Yep, we're setting a bad example!

Well, I guess I'm a little surprised at your son's choice too.

He's shot a wide variety of handguns and he wants a .38 snubbie?

If he will be getting his CHL, 5 shots of a minimally acceptable round, .38, isn't much to carry.

Now if Dad gets him a 1911 in .45 ACP for his primary, the snubbie as a BUG would paint a very nice self defense picture!!
