Up near Sherman on 75, we were coming up on a jam and the car ahead of me turned off the road behind several other cars, so I followed him, only one problem - he was a COP! In a marked car.
He pulled off the side of the frontage road where another cop was pulling everyone over and ticketing them. The one I followed got out of his car and waved me past the punishment line and just stood there shaking his head.
I don't know what I would have said but definitely dodged a bullet.

It was nice he gave you a warning.
Attitude on both sides is a major factor in getting a ticket. I know several occasions where I stopped people and they talked themselves into a ticket vs. a warning because of their poor attitude.
That is true. Some folks insist on arguing that the law is not what it says, and loudly cursing out the officer who's trying to just educate them on safety. Those folks just will not be satisfied until the officer hangs paper on them.
VERY TRUE..had one just the other day that would have been a warning for a real simple issue and he spouts off to go ahead and write it... my reply was ok as I wanted to provide the best customer service possible. I explained that he would have received a warning, but per his request I wrote it...

He then tried to stay that he had been talking to his passenger when he told me to write it..

I can't get the traction in my Super Duty to get the fronts off the ground.

Illegal exit off a freeway? I thought that is why they made 4WD.
You scoff laws! I wonder what you would think of metered on-ramps and diamond lanes!
The ratio of those who have talked themselves out of trouble to those who have talked themselves into trouble must be a very tiny number.

I got pulled over by DPS once when wasn't carrying, but handed CHL anyway. When I told the Trooper I didn't have my weapon with me, he said "Why the Hell not??" Still only got a warning!

I am a big believer that every traffic stop is an implicit negotiation. Someone is getting a ticket today, but I certainly do not need to insist on being the lucky person so awarded. Life is replete with choices.

After 35 years in law enforcement, I can safely say I never gave anyone a ticket. They had to earn it. For 30 of those 35 years (the first five are not considered), I can safely say I never wrote a citation because I was mad. I always had my mind made up when I initiated the stop. There were times I moved from actual citation to warning but not the other way. Had a guy get out of his car cussing me and the city and anything else he could think of and I told him he was getting a warning because I wasn't going to let him force me into citing him because I was really mad. There needed to be at least one adult present.

You, sir, should be used to teach all DPS/Police/Sheriff/Constable classes. Thank you for your service.

ChuckyBrown, thank you. I didn't want to sound like I was patting myself on the back. I just never saw any other way to operate. I am a TCLEOSE instructor and have taught many classes on Penal Code, CCP, Racial Profiling, Asset Forfieture and other subjects. A police officer should never issue a citation for revenge purposes or take someone to jail to punish them. How many times have I heard "if you don't shut up, I'm taking you to jail"? The courts deal with conviction and punishment.

Sounds like you were there when I was, except I think that my following the Trooper off the road as I did had something to do with him just waving me by.

Mt friend Frank got me a job as a park patrolman with him on the NY State Park Police. We were on strike against NY Telephone Company (which lasted 7 months, a whole 'nother story) and he knew that I was looking and knew me well enough to vouch for me. This was a little before LEO certifications became the rule in NY, so I was hired, as was Frank, direct off the street based on my US Navy Shore Patrol experience and the fact that I was a member of my town's reserve police contingent.
This was primarily a summer job, full time, but short term, mostly filled by teachers on vacation or young guys working their way into "big city" departments and such, but the state was kind (or the Lieutenant) and kept us on after the summer season ended on Labor Day.
One day a very light rain was falling and Frank, who was usually a motor officer, was riding with me in the patrol car, when we spotted a carload of kids pulling out of the park maintenance shop in a Volkswagon convertible with a 16 foot fence rail sticking up out of the car. I lit them up and pulled them over after a slow speed chase, and then, in a scene that really in retrospect reminds me of Barney Fife, we approached the miscreants. The Barney Fife reference? Frank had a gun and I did not. NY State Park Police temps provided their own guns, and I did not have a NY State Pistol Permit and was not eligible for armed status.
When asked what they were doing taking the fence rail they turned into a car full of ACLU attorneys; "The air is free, the trees are free, this is part of a tree, therefore . . ." and every time one of them opened their mouths to argue, Frank found another reason to write them a ticket. All I did was cite them for failure to yield and failure to signal, both based on following them for a mile or so at 30mph with lights on, blowing the siren and gesturing for them to pull over, and them reacting by pointing at themselves and shrugging and waving us by.
