I would not ask "what do you want?" To me, that is almost a kind of an invite to stay and explain. If I think the person is up to no good, I want "back off" to mean turn around and leave while you still can. That's just me though.

If there is an immediate threat then you just shoot and move, if possible. If the threat is a bit more theoretical, then you would yell stop! stay away! I'll shoot! get away! or variations of such. Anything to let both the assailant and passersby that you are feeling threatened and will react. It's a good idea to yell to have witnesses calling the police but to avoid the confusion of people thinking you are saying you're police yell 911! instead of "call the police!" Since your goal should be to protect life first and foremost anyway you can end the threat, including getting the heck out of there, should be used. If there is a crime happening that you feel you need to intervene in, deadly assault on another person or a spree shooting, and you feel that letting the actor know you are present and armed would put yourself in additional risk then say nothing and just shoot. I wouldn't risk shooting to stop someone fleeing unless I was in the path of their fleeing and in that case I would only say something if I didn't feel I could legally and morally shoot. A crook running me with a gun out is carrying a shoot me sign as far as I'm concerned regardless of what his motives at that time may be.

"Stop, Threat!" then shoot or "Stop, Drop your weapon!" then shoot. I always alert before I shoot when training and expect to do the same should I ever be caught in a situation to have to use my weapon.

This is a good thing for a person to think about . Just because one pulls out their weapon it does not mean they are going to fire it. What do you do? Some comply, some shoot or attack you, some run away and the most amazing thing is when a person charges you full speed screaming for you to shoot them.

I don't personally practice, but in police training for years we would be required to give a command so it is locked into my memory to do this. When I qualified with a local agency they also required this before firing the weapon. This is valuable because witness will hear you giving the person a warning, and many people will comply with your commands. That way when you are in a real situation you don't just point a gun w/o saying something.

Here are some examples. One phrase we had to practice during high risk take downs is

"I believe you to be armed and dangerous. Do what I say or you will be shot."

That is pretty clear and direct with 2 options for the bad guy. On top of commands one needs to present them selves with command presences so the BG knows you are capable of doing what you say.

Sheriff's dept drop the gun
Get or put your hands up!
Get back
Don't move
Drop the knife
get on the ground
stop or I will send the dog. Of course on this one the dog is saying run forrest run

When I took my CHL class, the instructor suggested either saying nothing ("Don't talk - shoot") or hollering "CHL - CHL - CHL!!". He jokingly said that doing so would draw other CHL's to the scene so that they could have a chance to empty their magazine as well (jokingly that is...). Seriously, the idea was that by hollering "CHL", you might avoid getting shot by another CHL or LEO who happens on the scene. (Assuming of course we had left our CHL badge at home that day )

I think the reality is most of us will only have the brain function to do one thing at a time in such a stressful situation - either talk or shoot. If you drew your gun in the first place, it was to shoot. I would think it is not like the movies where you get to say a catchy one-liner.

If I had to say something like "STOP" or whatever, that would be before I drew - say it while hand was going to the gun. But once the gun comes out, I think shooting and moving to cover will take precedence over talking.

I dont say anything. I just pull out my CHL badge and show it to them. Then they retreat. It works 100% of the time.....Ohhh, but it has to be the gold one
