I should add (the other post is long enough already) that I used to be a 40/45 and everything else is crap guy until last year. I feel comfortable with a 9mm as long as its with modern hollow points. For any caliber I prefer Federal HST and if I can't find those then Speer Gold Dots.
I should also mention that one of the guys I used to work with is an FFL. He would talk to the local Federal ammo rep who had a laptop full of ballistics. He said there was no noticeable difference between 9 and 40 but there is with a 45. He also said that if you carry a 380 you're better off using a FMJ because the hollow point round for 380 won't penetrate deep enough. For this part I heard it all from my friend/old coworker/FFL holder who talked to the Federal rep and saw the laptop. I know it could be considered hearsay so I'm just throwing that out there.
If you look online Federal HST in 9mm and in 45 both have impressive expansion, weight retention, and penetration.
