I'm not afraid of Nueva Progresso, Mexico, the deals are too good to pass up. We did stop going to Matamoros, I must admit. We have this theory: go early, the bad guys aren't up yet. I see senior citizens there every trip.

I plan to lock the pistol in the glovebox. No one has commented on that method.

If you are referring to locking the pistol in the glovebox while you drive into Mexico, then many have commented on that method. They said don't take the gun into Mexico. It is illegal and to suggest doing such is a violation of forum rules.

If you park on the Texas side and walk into Progresso, that would be okay as long as no body breaks into your car.

Ok, I'll comment on it: You will go to prison if you take a firearm in ANY shape or kind into Mexico and it is found.

You can, however, avoid jail if you tell them you're with the ATF and you're delivering the firearm to a Mexican cartel.

Anyone know of a good gunsmith/gun store in Yuma, AZ? Same idea......Travel across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, but say whoa at the Colorado River. Back when the national speed limit was 55, I came across the bridge and was immediately stopped and griped out for doing a speedy 56. "You Texas boys need to learn to slow down." I bet someone in Yuma does a booming business.

For those of you who don't know, Nuevo Progresso is border town. I have been there many times, although not for some years. The town is within a very short walking distance of the U.S. border. For most of my visits I paid a couple of dollars and parked in the lot on the Texas side. I walked over the bridge, did my shopping a walked back. All of the stores are on the main street as well as a couple of nice restaurants.

Unless you are buying something you can't carry or are disabled, there is no real advantage for driving into Mexico. If you do drive into Mexico, even a short distance, buy auto insurance in the U.S. before you go over.

I don't know how to be more clear, but locking a gun in a glove compartment does change the fact that it is illegal to have a gun in Mexico. As I stated in my earlier post just having an empty shell casing is enough to be arrested in Mexico.

Sorry, not hijack this thread, but since we are talking about going into Mexico, do you need a passport now just to walk across the border? It's been about 15 years since I've been to Mexico which was pre-9/11. Thanks.

+1 walk there and back. If you must drive, package your gun and mag in a bubble/cushion shipping envelope, rent a safe deposit box in a bank, and leave it there. It's cheap and only takes 10mins to do the paperwork. I do this routinely when traveling to Mexico.

You don't have to break the law to get into trouble in Mexico. You just need to look like a good target - to criminals and police alike. No joke. We use to go several times a year with friends before we all had kids. It's simply too dangerous now, even in the border towns. Used to be so much fun, it's a shame things have turned this way. Even the border towns on our side are shady at best.

If I was going to go accross now, first I need a really good reason. Second, I would never take a gun. I'm sure people still hunt accross the border and I think they can take their guns, but I'm sure there's plenty of pre-work that has to be done before you go. Even then, I'd use guns from the ranch I was visiting before I transport mine over there.

Nothing against Mexico, or it's people. That's just the way I see it. And, well, after all, it is Mexico.

When our boys were younger we used to periodically visit South Texas and Mexico birder towns. Ciudad Acuna was nice. Had good restaurants and good shopping. My post on the velvet Elvis originated in a joke I played on Mrs. Anygunanywhere once where I bartered a place down to almost nothing on a huge purple velvet Elvis. I told her I was buying it to hang it over the fireplace. She was near speechless.

Lots of other good fun on those trips. Even played a few jokes on the Border Patrol agents at the station off US 90 on the way back. Those are for another day.

LaJitas and the town across the border were great. Old man rowed us across.

Will not ever step foot in Mexico again.

we use to go when I was a kid, then when my kids were little a friend would go and several of us would pitch in and she would bring back bottles of vanilla....now you can by the Mexican vanilla at HEB....and the Mexicans are coming here to shop....no point in it, no point at all.

Really people? I have zero intentions of driving my truck into Mexico, especially with a gun.

I only tried to find out what others do in a similar situation. I WILL park on the Texas side, there is a big parking lot at the Nueva Progresso bridge, TEXAS SIDE. REALLY?

This is what I said two days ago: Thanks fellers, that's more option than I had at 4:49 this morning. Definately not crossing the water w/gun, definately bringing on the trip (provided I have my CHL by April??!!).

Yea, you must have a passport to cross. You can get in, but you're going to have trouble getting back.
