Yeah... Like anything else Hollywood turns to a movie, they tend to twist the facts. I was watching a show on the history channel yesterday about the real life story Braveheart was based on. Wow! Talk about getting away from reality...LOL. The character Mel Gibson played was not even a farm boy. In real life he was a trained soldier who became an outlaw.
Every once in a while they do it right. I remember the first time I saw a movie titled "Heartland" starring Rip Torn and Conchata Ferrell about early 20th century ranch life in Wyoming. Brutal and heart rending reality about the "good old days". Though, it's a little slow compared to most movies these days it's a little known film treasure worth watching.
The words, "dramatic, historic and poetic license" comes to mind. I would be willing to bet they stretch the truth more now than they did in the "good ole days".
Never let the truth stand in the way of telling a good story.

Yeah! I learned that after watching Jeremiah Johnson! Then I read about the real one....John Johnson (Johnston) aka Liver Eating Johnson aka Crow Killer Johnson. I think his real life story would have made a better movie.

Wow! I couldn't resist. I had to google it. You are right. The real story would have made a better movie. Maybe it would have been too violent for the time frame they made the Jeremiah Johnson movie? Movie standards back then were much stricter when it came to graphic violence.

As for Jane Fonda, that is yesterday's news.
Wow... Oldgringo....Sounds like you folks were smack in the middle of it all. I agree about the Jane Fonda thing. Why empower her by allowing her to keep us from seeing a movie. I suppose if she were the main player I would understand it more but with her being so insignificant in the movie, one could actually get a kick out of how far she has fallen. The key to my success in life has been my refusal to empower those I disagree with.
Sorry about the constant edits. My dad gummed iPad tries to guess what I am typing and changes the words. Sometimes I don't catch it until after I post.
I don't consider it her being empowered, I am just expressing my own empowerment to not have to put up with seeing her.

I liked the original movie form back in the early 70's. In the 90's I learned of the actual character from a guy I worked with when we were talking guns and somehow we got on Hawken rifles. I said something about Jeremiah and he said "You mean Liver Eating Johnston?" I read some excerpts from both the books about him. "Mountain Man" and (I may be wrong but close) "Crow Killer:The story of Liver Eating Johnson". There were also some dairies from his contemporaries that verify his life. He was a very large man I think 6''4" or taller. I can't find it now but I seem to remember there was a big bruhaha about Robert Redford moving his body from California to Colorado I think, and then it was removed by others and he was reburied in Wyoming. He was the Sheriff in Red Lodge, Montana toward the latter of his life.
Edited: Red Lodge, Wyoming corrected to Red Lodge, Montana

Red Lodge, Montana, the eastern end of the fantastic Beartooth Highway. It's a must drive.

I liked the movie, but the real character wouldn't have fit Redford's image. Or Sydney Pollack's as a director.

I'm not sure how it went from "The Butler" to "Jeremiah Johnson" but.....I haven't seen The Butler and probably never will. Now Jeremiah Johnson is STILL in my top ten all time favorites!

I didn't even know Hanoi Jane was in it until I read this thread because I don't watch anything with race-baiting racists like Oprah in it.

Well there was no avoiding Oprah. Hanoi Jane was not much more than a chair in the background. Oprah was all over it. With the politics of Hollywood being what they are, I would never watch any new movie if I avoided it because the writers, directors or actors being a socialist, libtard elitist or race baiter. I like watching movies, so I just ignore the ignorance of the crowd making and acting in them.

to a certain point. Most actors and actresses I can "tolerate" their polictical views to watch if I think it's a good movie, such as Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan (huge O'Bama supporter), but I cannot watch anything with Oprah because I feel she is a big reason O'Bama is in office (bought and paid for). Just my 2 cents.

We all have our tolerance limits regarding actor types: Hanoi Jane isn't someone I'll tolerate.

IIRC, it was 1968's presidential campaign and a friend and myself went to the Boston Common (downtown Boston, Mass. park area) and
heard US Presidential candidate Wallace speak. We were well aware of his segregationist past. But that day he was there to con a Massachusetts
liberal populace that he had changed and deserved their votes. We didn't believe him for a minute, but at least he had the stones to give it a shot.
But when he was shot and paralyzed for life in Maryland in 1972, I felt very bad for him. Nobody deserves that. :-(

"The Butler" is on my "to watch list".
I have pretty much given up on a person boycott of entertainers who have political and personal views that differ from my own.
Maybe I am just rationalizing, but I judge the work on it's merit, rather than by the personal beliefs of the entertainers or producers.

That is what I was trying to say with a couple of my comments above. You just made it sound more eloquent.

So anyway folks. Politics aside. If anyone wants to watch a good movie, this one is worth the buck twenty five from the red box machine.
