I can't decide if I want a AR pistol, or a AR SBR. Now that I have my trust, I think I can build an SBR for pretty cheap, and I understand that the online registration process for an SBR is pretty fast these days. But a pistol would cost less.

TAM can tell you that I have done this more than twice now. :coolgleamA:

I have had the 7.5 which I think is too short for me and now I have the 10.5. That short of a barrel being close to your head is a blast you never forget. I personally like the Noveske KX 5 or KX 3 flash hider. It puts all the fire and sound out in out in front of you. Not only is it easier on you, but the folks that are shooting close to you will appreciate it also.

What makes an SBR more money? What else would you do different other than buffer tube and stock?

I used to think an AR pistol was silly until ATF approved the Sig arm brace and also stated that it was not illegal to use the brace in a manner other than intended.

It also is easier to go from state to state with a pistol than an SBR.

My Ar pistol could also be my concealed handgun if needed. :evil2:

I thought I wanted the 7.5" but everyone I talked to said go 10.5" and after shooting one I went with that.

I added a neat little toy to the muzzle. It is Griffin armament's break with a blast shield. It makes that concussion everyone talks about disappear.
Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.

It sounds like it operates similar to the a Noveske flash hiders.

Very similar, it's two pieces.

The break, http://www.griffinarmament.com/Griffin- ... tmb338.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then the Shield http://www.griffinarmament.com/Griffin- ... gatmbs.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Screws on to the break. Pretty cool set up.

After looking at my spare parts box, I've been thinking about putting a pistol together in 300 Blackout. But, completed uppers--minus BCG & charging handle--are priced so low it seems almost criminal not to pick one up.

Has anybody tried the Sig Sauer SBX 'stabilizing brace' in person? Improvement over the SB15 or not?

I had one on my 7.5. It worked well, but I found it to be more cumbersome than a stock. On my 10.5 I just have the buffer tube. There are so many things out there now though that are legal I don't see the reason to waste $200.00 so the Sheriff has to say if it is ok for me to travel with my SBR.

I will say if I ever get the money I may give the SIG another look.

A $200 tax stamp to begin with, plus the cost of engraving the trust name onto the receiver, if I don't do it myself.

And if I were to build an SBR, I'd probably want to invest in a good stock and a higher end RDS like the Aimpoint Micro. You've seen the carbines that my son and I build. We try to use good parts and build 'em right. So that means investing in quality. You're right, in that I could build one for cheap as I stated above, but by that I mean cheaper to build than to buy. I'd still use good parts in it.

Wow! I did not know about the engraving, etc... I thought you paid your for your stamp and only had the hassle of call LE when you left the County. I do not know anything about a "trust."

I don't know about having to notify LE when leaving the county, I'll have to check into that. But once you've built/bought an SBR, the name of the trust has to be engraved into the metal of the lower receiver. Laser etching will not legally suffice. It has to be engraved into the metal. Now, I can buy a cheap vibrating engraver tool and do it myself......and it will look like I did it myself. OR, I can pay someone to make it look nice, maybe with a logo or something. Once that lower has been engraved, it is legal to use it for either an SBR or a 16"+ barreled upper, so you can build an SBR with a matching long-barreled upper for other purposes. Imagine, for instance this 18" DMR (below), with an engraved receiver and a matching 10" SBR upper with an Aimpoint Micro:

That rifle currently has a 4-16x50 Vortex Viper PST on it, instead of that ACOG, but you get the point: One lower with two uppers with different mission capability in one go-bag.....

Pretty cool, huh?

BTW, I didn't mean to hijack your pistol thread. It just got me to thinking. Carry on.

You didn't hijack anything. If it was not for you and your son I still would not have an AR pistol that functions excellent.

So thanks to you and yours. :cheers2:
