Charles L. Cotton wrote:As we get closer to the end of the legislative session, people are getting frustrated with the apparent lack of progress on pro-gun bills. I too am frustrated because I can't recall a legislative session in the last 35 years where we have been this close to the end with no guns bills passed. There are reasons for our experience this session, but I cannot and will not go into that now and endanger passing our bills. I will say this much, it's not what many people are claiming, at least not in total. Some people intentionally ignore the fact that it is not just gun bills that are bottled up; it's the case across the board.
I'm also frustrated at some of the tinfoil hat posts that I'm seeing, as well as those who mock accurate information that has been provided throughout this session. I've said it many times before, but it is worth repeating. Senators, House Members, their staff and our opposition all read the Forum on a daily basis!! If you truly care about passing pro-gun bills, then consider carefully what you post. I personally don't care what people post about me or my information. I'm a trial attorney and a 35 year veteran of the legislative and political wars, so I'm used to unfounded accusations by people with a personal ax to grind or who simply don't know anything about the subject matter or events. I do care about anything that hurts the cause and unfounded insults and attacks against elected officials hurt the cause. Again, I understand the frustration, but if you simply must vent, then do it in the shower. There will be plenty of time after the close of the legislative session to analyze the session and point blame where it belongs. Those who know me know I won't hesitate to call out those who hurt our bills, if that is ultimately the case.
Yes, a lot of work is going on to pass as many bills as we can. There is no conspiracy to kill open-carry, nor is there a plan to trade open-carry for campus-carry, HB308, or anything else. Those who believe that all Republicans are on-board with anything and everything we want, when we want it, simply do not understand politics, or life for that matter. You seem to believe that they will focus solely on our bills to the exclusion of the thousands of other bills that they also care about and want to pass. Get real folks, that isn't the way life works either within or without the legislature.
Chas.
That's what we've been missing: A tinfoil hot emoji! You can use it on yourself like the jester or others could vote it like the I Agree sign.
Seriously, thanks to Charles and the TSRA staff. I'm 100% confident that they are doing what they can for the cause in a difficult circumstance. This is what the folks on Open Carry.org don't understand: all Rs do not necessarily share our goals and our very limited bi-annual sessions have many competing priorities.

Charles, thanks again for all the great work you do. Those of us not "in the know" can feel a little helpless to the process sometimes, which I'm sure only fuels the impatience.

Hopefully there will be some time left in the session after they're done with the important issues
Lawmakers OK hashtags, but draw the line at 'Texas Time'
With 24 days left until the end of the session, a fast approaching deadline for committees to vote on legislation and a piles of bills left to debate, Texas lawmakers on Friday turned to ... hashtags, cowboy hats and daylight savings time.
...
Rep. Kenneth Sheets, R-Dallas, had a far easier time with his three resolutions to establish the hashtags, which are used to categorize tweets. The measures designate #txlege as the official hashtag of the Texas Legislature, #Texas as the official hashtag of Texas, and #TexasToDo as the official hashtag of Texas tourism.
HCR 35 from Rep. Marsha Farney would make the cowboy hat the official state hat, a long overdue measure in Farney's opinion.

I echo the support for Charles, the NRA, and TSRA for these issues that are important to many of us. The wife and I will be leaving on vacation for 10 days starting Tuesday and will have no internet access during that time. I am hoping things are clearer by the time I am able to get back online. I continue to trust Charles' insight and guidance and will not believe OC or any of the other gun bills are dead until he says so. Patience, grasshopper, patience.

For comparison, look at the nail-biting timeline of
SB 1907 in last session 83(R).
"S.B. 1907 prohibits a public or private institution of higher education from adopting or enforcing a provision prohibiting a CHL holder attending the institution from storing a legal handgun in his or her locked vehicle while parked on campus." Introduced in late April - Sent to Governor late May! With only 2 amendments, 1 House, 1 Senate.

And to me, this illustrates what they can do if the
right pro-active players are on stage and
they want to do it.
