Good to know. I had always heard that you couldn't, and so I've avoided picking up unwanted brass bearing the flute marks all these years.

I bought a G3 parts kit when they were cheap in the late '90s and built it up (minus pressing the trunion into the receiver and welding) from an exploded parts diagram that came with the part kit. It was my first rifle, and is still one of my favorites. Once you get past the recoil, they are capable of being quite accurate.

And yes, I too am doing my best to resist the temptation to buy one of the pistol configurations..
