The max security unit in Gatesville has a setup like that with a checkpoint between the road and parking lot.

I would leave my vehicle with gun in it on a public street off jail grounds and
keep it locked it is better to take a short walk than spend a long time in jail

Not that it applies to OP's training academy issue, but wanted to clarify that I was wrong about guns in the car at actual units. I finally stopped at the entrance to my unit and read the sign posted there. Usually I can't read it all because I'm driving past it. Here is the sign that I believe is posted at the entrance to every TDCJ unit:

So you can have your weapon in the car as long as it is unloaded and secured behind two locks (with one being your car door locks).

Which is completely unenforceable, criminally, as the statute only refers to the firearm/weapon. Loaded/unloaded DOES NOT MATTER in Texas. In other words, staying loaded is a violation of TDCJ admin rules, nothing more, unless you're committing a crime under PC 46. If that's the case, "unloaded" won't make it legal.
