They've probably been flying RC there long before drones were even thought of.

Not to get off topic, but there are several robotic dogs on the market currently. All pretty crude, granted. However, the US military has been developing a robot dog for several years to be used in troop support. I can follow troops and carry supplies without having to be directly controlled. There are some great videos on youtube of it and other robots in development.
