Friend of mine just went by our local Academy and all the black guns have been pulled. Sales clerk told him it was a "political" thing and corporate had them removed.

You have to show ID to vote, after all.
Think it was more the guy writing it down on a piece of paper and keeping it.
Ok, so what?
If you are pretending to be someone else, I can see some reluctance.
This strikes me as like the folk who are offended by having to present their receipts at the exit at Costco. I've heard every "reason" for that and none of them make a lick of sense.

Found a post on a blog (I don't know if links are allowed here):
Referencing Academy Sports - "The most shocking development is that the conference call outlined a new policy requiring any sale of more than 10 boxes in a caliber that Academy deems an “assault rifle caliber” will require the buyer to furnish personal information that Academy is planning on keeping in a database, other employees have stated that they were just directed to “report the transaction” with no clear outline on how to do so."

What does Academy need my ID for? They don't ask for it when I'm buying water or camping fuel or tent stakes.
I'm clearly over 18, so there's no issue with me buying .223...
If I'm not driving or carrying my handgun, why should I carry ID at all? I don't need my "papers" demanded by every two-bit clerk. I'm actually kind of tired of showing it to buy a drink. I'm almost 50 and there's no reason suspect I'm under 21.

What a crock. I should be able to buy a pallet as long as I have enough cash... Meanwhile I'll keep ordering from Ammoman.com with my credit card so the NSA can scoop up my details and put me on Obama's "watch list".

Yesterday I bought 10 boxes of Monarch 223 (200 rds is not even a good day shooting for me and my wife with our AR style rifles) and two boxes of 45 acp - no ID was asked for
Hmmm must be really new policy

I've seen a couple of references to a new policy today on other gun forums and Facebook pages. Apparently Academy is pulling ARs off of the display case (as they did after Sandy Hook). You can still buy them, just have to ask for them to be brought out. And they're now going to start tracking large AR caliber ammo purchases.

Idiots! No more Academy for me. And 5.56mm is medium caliber not high caliber. They need to start tracking that dangerous 30.06 caliber...
An old friend of my father's was a WWII vet and said he shot a German soldier in the shoulder with a M1 Garand and swore it took his arm off..

I heard about their new policy in a tweet from Guntalk. The corporate office has directed the stores to remove all modern sporting rifles from the display, Any "large" purchases of ammo require the purchaser produce an ID. The identity is recorded in a database for an unreported purpose. I stopped by the Academy on my way home and went to the gun counter and customer service. I asked if what I heard was true and they confirmed it. I told them I was a regular loyal customer, but I would be taking my business to Cabela's. It's sad to see a Texas company betray their customer base for political correctness (censorship). Can anyone say Sports Authority?

I bought ammo at the Fort Worth store at about 3 today... they did not ask for ID to purchase ammo, and would have been told to shove off if they did.
I do not lose any rights because some towel head terrorist shoots up a gun free zone.
Write them and tell them to cut the crap.

Purchased a glock 43 today. Noticed AR type rifles had been pulled from the rack and placed in boxes in the cages below. Joked about Academy trying to start another panic, and I that remember the unpleasantness from the previous panics.
Was informed that they can be viewed and sold upon request ... no mention of why they were removed from the display racks.
Will stop at an Academy later in the week and purchase more than 10 boxes of 5.56 and/or 7.62x39 just to see what happens.
I suppose that I might stop shopping at Academy once the intention behind removing the AR rifles is announced. I have unable to find a creditable statement as to "why".

I have made a new personnel policy that every time I hear the Hildabeast talk about gun control I am going to by more ammo. Yesterday I stopped in Academy and purchased 6 boxes of .45 HP's
BTW There was no ID check otherwise they could restocked them themselves.

Unfortunately, there are no Academy's in Iowa. However, I do plan on purchasing a couple of boxes of ammo every time I go out shopping. I feel the panic is coming.
