My EDC varies quite a bit, but my nightstand gun has been the same for years, H&K USP .40. To be fully accurate, it is not in the nightstand but attached to the side of the mattress right behind and below my pillow, in a Bianchi holster. My plan A is always to get a rifle or a shotgun in an emergency, but in the event that my wife or I are truly taken by surprise during the middle of the night, the H&K is only inches away. (That's assuming an intruder manages to get past the two german shepherds sleeping in the hallway).

4" XDS .45 w/ XTP's and CT laser on the night stand. 12 ga. w/ 00 buckshot leaning in the corner. A national champion martial artist w/ Samurai swords in the other bedroom. A very large and protective Akita in the living room. We're good to go.

My nightstand gun is a Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag. w/125 gr. hollow points. If that don't do it I have a Rem.870 12 ga. in the closet.

They are great HD guns. Others may disagree, but if you have children that may have to be moved to safety, I would recommend a sling, so you don't have to lay it down to pick up kids etc., or when transitioning to your pistol. I just recently got an AR, and am still learning all of the intricacies of that platform, I plan on taking a tactical course soon, so it may become my "bump in the night" go to gun. I also recommend a mounted light, and a side saddle for extra rounds, since that is the main drawback to a shotgun for HD is that you can only get 6 rounds with a regular magazine or up to 9 with an extended. And practice, practice, practice. Including clearing your house in the dark with it mounted on your shoulder (unloaded of course)

Thanks for the tip. The reason I dont consider my AR, or have a shot gun for HD yet is that I dont like the idea of needing both hands to operate the weapon.

However, my main nightstand gun is my M4 with a 40 round mag and a few spares in the nightstand.
Gesh thats a big nightstand.

It will all depend on each individual's needs, room size, hallway width and length, doors that are open or closed normally, the location of other people, pets etc.. in the house, so you will have to decide what will work best for you. in mine, there are no closed doors to negotiate, my hallway is 4'-6" wide, 12' long it looks directly into the den, kitchen, and back door. And then to the right is my living room and front entryway. I keep a light on in the kitchen and in the front living room that is not controlled by a wall switch to backlight anyone who has entered there, and have a place of concealment to use before exposing myself to the back door. I run through intruder scenarios every couple of months with my family, so they know what my plan is and I know where they will be. We have signal words for "all clear" that no one else would know to use. If they get past me, they will still have to deal with Mrs. Jusme, and my 18 year old Eagle Scout and his shotgun. and their "ready positions", put the intruder into a triangular crossfire. ( so you might want to knock before coming in :biggrinjester: )

For me it's a Star BM 9mm. It's the first pistol I ever bought, and it's been relegated to Night Stand Duty for the past few years. It only holds eight rounds, but the wife backs me up with her Taurus PT92 and its' 15 round capacity. :evil2:

A 10.5" SBR in .300 Blackout, suppressed, with 208 grain A-MAX subsonics. It's about as loud as a hand clap, needs no earpro, is a 1/2" shorter than a carbine length AR with the suppressor mounted, hits about like a +P .45 ACP, and has 30 rounds on tap in the first magazine. Backup is a G17 with a TLR-1s light mounted.

Nightstand gun is whichever Glock wasn't my carry choice that day. Carry gun stays in the holster attached to the last pair of pants I wore that day, other one gets nightstand duty. I have a 19 loaded with 124gr HST's and a 32 swapped to a .40 loaded with 180gr HST's and a TLR-1 I swap between the 2. Lately, the 32 is the primary nightstand gun. Also have a Benelli Nova 12 gauge.

I wonder how long until there is a comercially available load for this situation that will expand like a HP pistol round. Be hard to beat if it would have an expanding bullet.

I keep the PPS .40 with HST's on the dresser, 1300 Defender w/ 00 buck next to safe in closet, 10.5" AR Pistol on top of safe (its the last resort).
