If the woman was involved (it is hard to tell from the story) she may not have know what was going down. The bad guys may have told her they needed a ride to buy something. We will never know. Sad that someone lost their life over something so stupid, but that is life as it exists rather than how I would like it to be.
I would not choose to unholster my firearm if life was not in potential jeopardy. As others have probably said, property can be replaced and is often insured.

Update
Investigators tell KFDM News Shalala Sharelle Fletcher, 36, died when an off-duty security guard fired shots at a vehicle to disable it after two men stole beer from the Express Mart on Jimmy Johnson Boulevard at about 5 a.m. Saturday and began running toward the vehicle. Investigators say one of the bullets struck and killed Fletcher, who was a passenger. They say the off-duty security guard had pulled up to the store to purchase something early Saturday morning when the scene unfolded.

Similar situation happened to me a few weeks ago. I was at Best Buy with my wife and youngest son. I had walked outside and pulled the car around while my wife and son were still in the store. I pulled into a cut out section and waited for them to come out. Two men walked out and appeared to almost fall. The first guy was running and it appeared he had a bunch of merchandise in his shirt and the store clerk couldn't catch up.
Long story short I asked her if she saw the guy run out of the store, and she said no. My son then asked me why didn't I do anything. I sat and thought for a few seconds and then began to tell him how I'm not a police officer and it's not my job to do so. I explained to him that me being able to carry my firearm is not a badge to go and arrest people and that I only carry to protect my family.
