U.S. passports are valuable in criminal circles. I lost mine (through my own carelessness) and it haunted me for several years. Every time I entered the country, I got special attention.

Yep, because we now have replacement ones. If there is anything good, the chips in the lost ones are not valid and if someone uses them, they will be arested.

My episode was in the 1980s, before passports contained chips.

So, the USPS mail man does make mistakes on important documents. They did it to us twice.

Yes, and DPS also makes mistakes. There was one reported case of two licenses being put in one envelope, so that one person's license went to another person. They have also entered addresses incorrectly.
