"Now, to the RNC convention… First, let me address the issue of the Cleveland Police Union leadership requesting of Ohio Governor John Kasich a suspension of the Open Carry Law for the convention. Yes, I’m a Life Member of the NRA and y’all know that I’m an NRA Board member, but what I am stating here is my personal assessment.

I am a serious and staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, but I also have some common sense. In light of the recent terror events in Orlando and Nice, — combined with the rise of ambush -tyle attacks against our law enforcement officers — I believe a secure environment is more important.

My recommendation would be a security cordon radius around the RNC convention site where the open carry law is suspended for the time frame of the event. It should be the decision of the head of the Cleveland Police to determine the radius of that cordon. This has already been done in the immediate convention zone area — but in light of these recent activities of ambushes against law enforcement officers, that security cordon should be expanded — for the safety of our police officers, and those outside that immediate zone."

Anyone officially representing the NRA who suggests that 2nd amendment rights be suspended for any reason for any length of time needs to be removed from that office.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing that OC is a wise move in this case.

He is not representing the NRA and it was a mistake for him to even mention that he's was just elected to the Board. None of us on the Board can represent the NRA, unless we are gathered in an official meeting and are acting as a body. That said, I am very careful what I say when being interviewed or during speaking engagements.

I bet West will be more careful in the future.

He made sure to tell us that he was a board member... whether or not he was representing the NRA in an official capacity when posting this is irrelevant... He has no place on the board with this type of opinion.

I will be addressing my concerns directly with LTC West. I expected better from a fellow artillery officer. I will not be voting for him as an NRA board member if he continues to espouse the infringement of second amendment rights.

However, LTC West was very clear in his comment that he was stating "my personal assessment."

Does not matter if it was his "personal assessment"... Anyone who supports suspension of constitutional rights, as a personal assessment or direct representation of the NRA, should not be sitting on the board. Don't even get me started about a military officer wanting to suspend constitutional rights... kinda the whole purpose of that amendment.
