If you can't work the slide reliably, then I think revolver is the obvious choice. Now you just need to decide which one. The Ruger SP 101 might be a decent compromise if you want something carryable that is bigger than a J frame.

As for holsters, everyone needs a decent snap slide in his collection and these have the bonus of being ambidextrous...lol. I bought my first one when I sent my XDS in for recall work. I borrowed a 1911 from a friend and got a snap slide to carry it in. Turns out, the 1911 fit relatively well in the XDS crossbreed but the snap slide has been used with all my guns at least once since then.
