I got over being embarrassed over the discount when I retired.
retired = long on time, short on money

Cabelas also has a military discount. I was in the Fort Worth store picking up a 22LR pistol so I could teach my daughter how to shoot and firearm safety. When they asked for my DL my DD214 fell out or my wallet and the Customer Service Rep saw it. He asked if I was Veteran and I said I was. He that's good for 10% discount. I said I'll take it. Lol

I feel the same way about the military award plates on my vehicles. The State of Texas graciously waves annual registration fees for some awards. It saves me big bucks annually, but I always feel a bit embarrassed especially when someone asks me, "what's that medal?" (even though it names it on the plate). I usually just smile and say, "nothing special."

I totally disagree, even a five dollar purchase I use it at Home Depot. Every penny heads up! More bullet for me

Ok this drives me insane...the fact that ya'll are embarrassed, ashamed, etc to ask if there's a military discount says so much about the failures of us civilians to make it known what heroes ya'll truly are. I don't care if you're an Army Ranger or a telecom specialist or if you served 2 years or 20. You still made the commitment and took the oath and I couldn't be more honored than to have the chance to get to know each and every one of you. So keep your heads up and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

First, thank you very much TT.
Its not the service part that some men are not comfortable about. Its a mostly man thing with using coupons in general. I know some women that don't like using them either.
I don't mind using them, discounts, for a decent savings. But don't like when the wife makes me pull out the ID for a .80 cent savings.
Funny though, when buying online I always look for a code for at least free shipping.
Thanks again!

Although I did serve 8 years active duty I have used a veteran discount twice in my life, once for renewal of my LTC and once for purchase of the freezer at Lowe's. After review of the Lowe's website I probably should not have received the discount.
I always feel somewhat squeamish about taking a discount like this or even a senior citizen discount. It's not like I need the money, there are many more people with finances that are much more desperate than mine.
I guess it's like a tax break though, if it is there you take it. I still feel uncomfortable asking for a discount because I served in the military and am fortunate enough that I have reached the age to get a senior discount but why longevity should be rewarded is beyond me. I will not be asking for a discount again at Lowe's unless I shop on one of those days that meets their requirements.
On the other hand, new freezer coming Tuesday so my wife is happy.

Military discount at Lowe's is store by store and cashier by cashier. I shop at the Lowe's that honors the discount. I've never had a problem using it at Home Depot and Calloway's. I only did 4 years, but I do work for one of those government agencies that issues a DOD id card. I also have military plates on my truck and veteran on my LTC. I'll be sure and have veteran added to my DL when I renew next year. I have no problem asking if a military discount is available. I consider it happy hour funds. I served proudly and in a roundabout way still serve.

I am a little embarrassed because, I wasn't required to fight, I wasn't disabled in any way and it was only 3 years of service, and it was more than 40 years ago. Veterans of my time period were stereotyped as having mental issues, and not able to get a job so they all needed help.
Even the VFW didn't like us, they didn't want to have anything to do with us even those who were required to fight.

It takes all jobs to make the military function. It doesn't matter if you didn't see combat. I see this so often in our vets and it breaks my heart. Your role made other roles possible. Furthermore, your three years of dedicated service is not in any way diminished by the length of time you have been out, nor the way others react to you. I wish you could visit the VFW here. They welcome everyone with open arms including nubblet civilians making quilts like me. Please don't think less of your service because of the shortcomings of others. I for one am grateful for the time you put into the service of our country and our freedoms.

I appreciate all you do for the Vets, and I have visited a couple of VFWs since, and there are some great people there. These days though I just mostly want stand back and let those who are more deserving and more in need than I am. The Army treated me well for the short time I was there, but it was a short although important period in my life. I am a big benefactor of the training, discipline, exposures and experiences they gave me.
God bless you for the good things you are doing.

Don't forget there is also the American Legion which I have found to be a great Organization.
